A couple of hours into state the filibuster of state Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, SB 5, Mike Bradford, am abortion opponent took his lunch break from work to speak against abortion from his seat in the Senate gallery. He shouted, "History will show that we're on the wrong side of this debate," and was escorted out of the gallery.
Bradford called SB 5 "bandage legislation." He said abortions should be banned "because that's the only way you're going to solve the problem of killing innocent lives." He explains in this clip why he believes abortion is genocide.

Thanks, that gave Senator Davis a break from speaking.
Keep on talking Wendy!

(16,103 posts)Genocide: the deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group.
Since as a medical procedure an abortion is available to any woman in the United States, it is not in any way, shape or form the equivalent of Genocide.
This man is an idiot...that's all!

genocide (n.)
1944, apparently coined by Polish-born U.S. jurist Raphael Lemkin (1900-1959) in his work "Axis Rule in Occupied Europe" [p.19], in reference to Nazi extermination of Jews, literally "killing a tribe," from Greek genos "race, kind" (see genus) + -cide. The proper formation would be *genticide.
Generally speaking, genocide does not necessarily mean the immediate destruction of a nation, except when accomplished by mass killings of all members of a nation. It is intended rather to signify a coordinated plan of different actions aimed at the destruction of essential foundations of the life of national groups, with the aim of annihilating the groups themselves. (Lemkin)
Earlier in a similar sense was populicide (1799), from French populicide, by 1792, a word from the Revolution. This was taken into German, e.g. Völkermeuchelnden "genocidal" (Heine), which was Englished 1893 as folk-murdering.
What "national groups" are being targeted again? Because they have already targeted the poor through cutting of the programs that benefit those in that group. Unless this person thinks that having legal abortions somehow equals forced abortions in order for it to qualify as genocide...
I hope Wendy has the stamina to remain on her feet, not just talking the whole time. I think it's heinous that the rules say she can't at least have some water.

(61,710 posts)and someone else is talking? Because another legislator was just talking, a "pro-life" Catholic Democrat, who took issue with some of her comments and those she read, about religious grandstanding. If someone else is permitted to speak, I hope she can have a refreshment if they are going to interrupt her.

(29,414 posts)but I thought it said that a person can't have anything for the duration. They are "allowed" to transgress, but after three such errors, the Lege can stop the filibuster and have their vote after all.

(112,620 posts)I tune in occasionally, but haven't seen any points of order thus far. Considering that she has been speaking for about five hours that is actually amazing since the Repukes are obviously ready to play "gotcha".

(29,414 posts)(to where YT and other video sites aren't blocked.) If y'all haven't seen anything so far, then I'm sure she's doing fine. From what I've read, she's taken part in filibusters before, so I'm sure her experience and other experienced members have talked about ways of surviving it

If state Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, is charged with one more violation of the filibuster rules, her attempt to talk Senate Bill 5 to death could be over.
Davis received her second warning when the Senate voted 17 to 11 to sustain a point of order called by state Sen. Tommy Williams, R-The Woodlands, on Davis for receiving assistance to put on a back brace.
Sen. Rodney Ellis, D-Houston, help Davis to put on a back brace, violating a rule that prevents the filibusterer from receiving outside assistance.
A filibuster is an endurance contest and its to be made unaided and unassisted, Williams said in defense of the point of order.
Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst clarified after the point of order was sustained that if three points of order are sustained, a simple majority in the Senate could vote to end the filibuster. With a majority of Republicans in the chamber, that vote would surely succeed, and a vote on SB 5 would follow.

(61,710 posts)not germaine, she won't be penalized, even if she answers it. I heard Dewhurst say that. She wasn't penalized when the idiot started squawking in the peanut gallery. She was penalized for a democrat asking her a nongermaine question which she answered, and for assistance putting on the back brace.
