Was Rick Perry’s aid request for West deficient?

A day after the Federal Emergency Management Agency denied Gov. Rick Perry’s request to declare the Central Texas town of West a major disaster area, the recriminations rumbled from D.C. to Austin.

Republicans denied that Perry’s request for a disaster declaration was deficient, defective or incomplete.

“I believe that Gov. Perry’s request met the thresholds to receive major disaster declaration and open up the benefits needed to aid in the recovery of West,” said Rep. Bill Flores, a Bryan Republican who represents West. “I will continue to work with the governor, as well as with the rest of the Texas congressional delegation, as we move forward with the process to get the declaration needed to provide the support that the community is entitled to under the Stafford Act.”

The Obama administration continued to insist that the Texas governor’s request did not meet the requirements to warrant a major disaster declaration. But Flores, Perry and other Republicans pointed to Obama’s earlier pledge — made during a memorial service for the 12 fallen first responders and 3 other victims — that the feds would help West rebuild after the April 17 fertilizer plant explosion.

“During the memorial service for the fallen first responders, President Obama himself said ‘your country will remain ever ready to help you recover, and rebuild, and reclaim your community,’” Flores noted. “Following that service, Gov. Perry, Sen. Cruz and I met backstage with the president, and he again assured us that the federal government would help West rebuild. We must hold the president to his word to help the community of West.”

and the congress screwing around with appropriations is what forced the closing of our trailer park, people can't wait for ever for the answer if they will get help or not. (note we were the highest part of the island but were exactly at landfall, so, we got it big time, if it were a bit north or south we would have been fine. )

disasters destroy large areas of land and property, West Texas lost a few blocks and a factory and a school and a nursing home because Texasdoes not allow small towns to zone their properties and people build where ever, nd was caused by someone squeezinga dime and rolling the dice with the future of the town - let them pay.

I feel badly for the folks for who homes was destroyed or damaged but your representatives have not operated properly. I would love to see them gone.

Maybe the government doesn't have money to provide aid of his previous ineptness?

WASHINGTON - Democratic Rep. Chet Edwards is unleashing a new TV ad today blasting GOP challenger Bill Flores for leading a company through a bankruptcy that cost taxpayers $7.5 million.

The allegation stems from a Dallas Morning News report last week revealing that the Sugar Land-based oil and gas drilling contractor at which Flores was an executive had gone through a bankruptcy in which it repaid only a fraction of its debt to a federal agency.

The ad will air starting today in Waco and Bryan-College Station, according the Edwards campaign. It says:

"Have you heard the news? The Dallas Morning News has uncovered that former Houston oil executive Bill Flores led his company through a bankruptcy that left taxpayers on the hook for $7.5 million….

surrounded by, under value, insurance underwriting. The State of Texas regulates insurance. The City of West regulates zoning. Residence of West should sue the State of Texas for the remaining amount to complete recovery of their losses.

Corny and Carnival are too busy having tea to vote for government help, except to vote for subsidies and loop holes for business.

I really feel sorry for the innocent people of West who lost so much, and think they really deserve help from government entities, both state and federal. It could take years for them to get anything from the plant's owner or his insurance company, especially if it has to go to the courts. They need help now.

However, not to repeat the good points already made, do the people of West, and the people of Texas know what hypocrites their governor and senators and representatives are? I want them to KNOW that in their hearts and minds even as they receive help.

Love the picture of Cornyn so mad he could spit nails. Let he and Cruz, & Goodhair get down on their knees and beg.... but then, they don't really care about those peoples welfare, they just don't want to look bad and inept.
