2 C-bus PD officers arrested on federal drug charges

snip-"John Castillo, 31, of Grove City, a member of the Columbus Division of Police since June 2019, and Joel M. Mefford, 34, of London, a member of police division since June 2011, were both indicted on charges of possession of cocaine. Mefford is also charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and money laundering."

snip-"According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for Ohio's Southern District, Mefford was investigating drug crimes in February 2020 and illegally accessed a garage area that belonged to a suspect in the investigation. The indictment alleges that Mefford discovered two kilos of cocaine, stole one of the kilos, and left the other kilo for officers to discover during a raid that was planned for the next morning."

snip-"On March 7, 2020, Mefford was again investigating a drug trafficking operation at houses on Ambleside Drive and Kilbourne Avenue in Columbus. The indictment states that Mefford arrested one person at one of the houses and took a bag that held multiple kilos of cocaine. Mefford then went to the house on Kilbourne Avenue and took out a kilo from the bag. Later that same day, Mefford allegedly turned in one kilo of the cocaine to the Columbus police evidence department and stole the other kilos so he could sell them."

snip-"Mefford is also accused of stealing 20 kilograms of cocaine from the Columbus police evidence department in April 2020 and replacing it with fake cocaine. According to the indictment, Mefford deposited over $72,000 of drug trafficking money into his personal bank account.

When cops claim they've seized pounds/kilos/whatever of drugs...you know there's a few pounds they've neglected to mention that went to personal use.
