Now I’m puzzled by an old song ‘picking up pawpaws and putting them in your pocket’.
😵?💫😵?💫😵?💫😵?💫😵?💫😵?💫

Edit: Found the lyrics.

Where, oh, where is sweet little Nellie?
Where, oh, where is sweet little Nellie?
Where, oh, where is sweet little Nellie?
Way down yonder in the paw paw patch
… Come on, boys and let's go find her
Come on, boys and let's go find her
Come on, boys and let's go find her
Way down yonder in the paw paw patch
… Pickin' up paw paws, put 'em in your pocket
Pickin' up paw paws, put 'em in your pocket
Pickin' up paw paws, put 'em in your pocket
Way down yonder in the paw paw patch

when I was a kid growing up in Ohio, they were all over the woods we played in as kids. Good to hear they are making a comeback.

there were still some associations that the fruit was old timey, rural food for poor folks, bah. And there was an unfortunate soul 'tied to a paw-paw tree' in the Hatfields & McCoy feud I think.

These articles have stimulated interest, I'll be looking for paw paws definitely.

They have the texture of custard and they taste like over ripe bananas.

Never was a fan.

There must have been another one nearby, because it bore fruit almost every year. The fruit is weird - fragile, tastes a little like a cross between a mango and a banana. The tree is pretty - has a bark the color of an elephant's skin, and big, teardrop-shaped leaves. Our neighbors have one, but it must be the only one for miles - I've never seen it bloom or bear fruit, and we've lived in this house for over 20 years.
