Cuomo's bizarre plan to force New Yorkers to get new license plates

Leave it to Gov. Cuomo to come up with a wacky Rube Goldberg-like scheme, even for something as small-time as license plates.

Cuomo this week announced that the state is changing the style of its plates, and everyone with vehicles more than 10 years old will have to get one.

Oh, it’ll cost you an extra $25 — plus $20 more to keep the same plate numbers.

As E.J. McMahon notes in his column, Team Cuomo tried to present the change more as a fun contest than a new fee: New Yorkers get to vote on one of five possible designs, four that show the Statue of Liberty and one featuring the new Tappan Zee — er, Gov. Mario M. Cuomo — Bridge.

Critics speculate that the selections are rigged, because they’ll divide the pro-Statue of Liberty vote, leaving the plate with the monument to Cuomo’s dad likely to win.

“This indeed seems kind of rigged,” polling expert Nate Silver tweeted. “A bunch of near-identical Statue of Liberty designs will split the SoL vote.”

Remember driving is a privilege and not a right, but blast them grubby revenuers. for privileging themselves off our privilege.

2. My car is less than 10 years old, so I don't have to get a new license plate.

And at least they ditched the orange and blue ones, which they also used to have when I first got my license. They look terrible on most colored cars - like red, for instance.

But I do have to get a new driver's license this year - and there's an option to get a REAL ID or Enhanced Driver License. The latter costs an additional $30! I'm wondering if this is in preparation for Trump's plan to "show me your papers" - like we already have to do if we buy groceries!

9. The Real ID law was passed in 2005

The idea came about as a reaction to 9-11.

The Enhanced is something the border states pushed for and offer. If you travel to Canada (like we do now that I found my paternal bio family up there), Mexico or the Caribbean it's very handy. If you have a current passport you don't truly need either though.

Oh and I agree about the blue and 'gold' plates. They're just as unattractive to me now as they were in the mid 60s/early 70s.

3. Not a fan of AC.

Now have become an even lesser fan of AC. My empty pockets are turned inside out and AC just keeps coming for more!

4. There really is no need to get new license plates

I've had the ones I have now since I got my Pontiac in 2003 and I transferred them to my Chevy in 2017. And they aren't those ugly orange ones! Why would anyone need new plates unless they're rusty or illegible??

5. My orange and blue ones are in mint condition and the last thing I care about are license plates.

Most I see these days are the orange ones. And I agree that there's no need to replace them - it's just an excuse to extort more money from New Yorkers - and a waste of materials as well.

4 of the 5 new license plate designs have the Statue of Liberty. I also think AC is sending the message that New York has and always will accept and open the door to immigrants. That Tappan Zee Bridge plate might as well be MC's mug instead of the image of the bridge.

8. You do realize most of the license plates of the blue/white variety are 18yrs old

The present ones blue/yellow are issued for new registrations only since 2010. I assure in many places the blue/white ones are becoming delaminated. People refuse to get new ones, we went through this from 1986-2000 with the old liberty plates, white with red border. The state legislature finally had to add a section to the Motor Vehicle Law, mandating the change over from the old blue and yellow. There was a time when we got new plates every year.

The cost the same as it did when the other plates came out. Of course people can choose from more than 200 other varieties for additional fee.

I live in Orange County but I have to pay an extra $50.00 dollars more for the MTA thats NY City for each one of my cars. Antique vehicles are single year registrations doubled now include that fee too.

10. Had mine that long through it being

tagged, hitting various things, and three cars. So it is still slightly bent and with a bit of black paint on it. NY will have to pry it out of my cold dead hands.

I expected to get new ones when I got a new car in 2017, but the salesman came to pick me up with the new car and just transferred them, so I kept them. And I did have the blue and orange ones back in the day. I inherited my mother's 1971 Plymouth Duster back in 1981 when she got a new car and I had my license and needed a car for work - I still remember the plate number, I had that car for awhile, too.
