Rep Charles Rangel supported scaling back Wall Street reform law to aid donors, not constituents: rival

Rep Charles Rangel’s campaign contributions from Citigroup and his support of legislation that would benefit the big bank emerged Wednesday as a flash point in his battle to keep his seat in Congress.

State Sen. Adriano Espaillat, who is opposing Rangel in the June 24 primary, charged that Rangel put the interests of donors over those of constituents when he backed a measure to scale back a much-debated provision of the 2010 Wall Street reform law known as the Dodd-Frank Act.

“Families in upper Manhattan and the Bronx need a representative who will fight for them for a change,” Espaillat said.

Combatting inequality will be achieved by “strengthening — not weakening — the reforms in Dodd-Frank,” he added.
