Bratton responds to ‘unusual’ weekend violence

Police commissioner Bill Bratton told officers on Monday that this weekend's rash of violence, which included a spate of gunfire and the stabbing of two young children in Brooklyn, underscores the importance of what we in the NYPD do.
At a promotion ceremony at police headquarters, Bratton said the amount of violence we saw in an unusual weekend reinforces the need for an energized police department
to ensure we are committed in our continuing quest
to keep crime rates going down, to keep disorder and fear reduced in this city.
"We cannot have a city where two 7-year-old children, going to get an ice cream are stabbed, one killed, the other one fighting for her life," he added, referencing an attack in East New York, where a 6-year-old and a 7-year-old were stabbed in an elevator. "That is not the City of New York that we want to police. That is not the City of New York that we are responsible for."
