Jersey City Councilwoman In Hit-and-Run Incident

Last edited Sat Aug 6, 2022, 02:06 PM - Edit history (6)

YourHHRS News: (C)losed-circuit television video footage reveals...(that) Jersey City Councilwoman-at-Large Amy DeGise didn’t stop after she struck a cyclist who ran a red light...

The 3-minute video shows the intersection of Forrest Street and Martin Luther King Drive at 8:00 AM on July 19. The stoplight is green, and turns red at the 45-second mark. At 58 seconds, it shows the cyclist victim, identified as Andrew Black, entering and riding through the intersection though the light is red.

At the 1-minute mark, the midsection of Black’s bicycle is seen being struck by the front passenger side of the black SUV driven by DeGise. Black flips headfirst over his bicycle and onto the ground.

DeGise doesn’t appear to slow down as she drives through the intersection...Black is then seen rising and limping to the left-hand corner of Martin Luther King Drive as bystanders gather around to provide aid. His mangled bicycle ends up on the corner of the right-hand side of the street.

A source has reportedly said DeGise had hit her head in the crash and when she realized what happened, she reported it to police...(T)here is reportedly video of her and a man entering a police station about six hours later...(She) was cited for failure to report an accident and for leaving the scene of an accident...(H)er father, Tom DeGise, is the (Hudson) county executive...

While Black is primarily at fault because he should have seen that the light was red, DeGise should have seen Black in the intersection as she approached it and yielded the right of way (and of course she shouldn't have left the scene of an accident). Let's see what she has to say about how she spent those six hours -- a quick coma? Temporary dementia? A mini-lam while she sobered up?

Of course the drive is going to claim they didn't see it and thought they hit a pothole. Being a politician it will be downgraded to the lower offense with the driver compensating the cyclist financially. It often takes two mistakes to make a accident, prime example Bike ran the light and didn't look, the car wasn't keeping a good eye on the road.

Jalopnik.com: A new report reveals DeGise has an extensive history of traffic and parking violations, include nine overdue fines she only settled on Monday (the day before the accident)...

Aside from the Jersey City tickets, the 36-year-old DeGise also had one outstanding ticket in Hoboken and one in Bayonne. She had been ticketed at least 13 other times in Hudson County in incidents she had previously resolved — three in Hoboken, five in Bayonne, two in Secaucus, one in North Bergen and two in Union City.

In a February 2017 incident in Secaucus, DeGise’s vehicle was impounded when police found her license was suspended. The true number of resolved tickets, though, is likely much higher.

DeGise has so many resolved tickets in Jersey City that the state website, which can display 25 tickets, said the number exceeded the capability to display them.

Maybe she spent some of those six hours settling up those overdue tickets -- and with the help of her political power broker pedigree, maybe she was able to get it back dated.
