I put an offer for a house in Berkeley Heights ..

I really liked the schools, proximity to nature, train to nyc etc .. and THEN on city data - I realize its a very Republican town .. the Mayor ran unopposed last time - Obama lost to both McCain and Romney ....

I was trying to stay brave by telling myself that NJ republicans aren't as crazy as Texas Republicans ... and I discovered the presence of Bekeley Height Tea Party ...

I am pretty open about my political beliefs - (lawn signs, badges etc) ... Will I be forced to be a closeted Democrat in order to make friends in my new neighborhood - or risk alienating folks there?

plus you may influence some of the Repubs into altering their stance. I live in Texas and have a nice circle of Dems. I have also changed the minds of several conservatives who had never been exposed to liberals before. Good Luck

Just be you . . . it's still a good community with good people. Oh - and I close in Flemington on 9/30.

Yeah - THAT Flemington. They are just going to love all of those Buono signs that go up later that day!

And I think the man who lived there is probably going to turn over in his grave. Seriously.

Totally not joking here.

You know Walter (Moose) Foran? His father was Arthur Foran. You'd know Walter because his name is on everything . . . streets, Rutgers, etc. etc. Ran for Governor in 1980 - NJ Senate Leadership. . . his father was buddies with Walter Edge and Harding? Yeah - that guy?

His widow died last year and we bought their house!

Now lets you and me get out there and play a nice clean game of literally turning a red house blue!

My boss is Walters second cousin. So Walters son that we are buying from and he are peers. One Foran went to Flemington for the Iron Works and my boss's branch stayed in ship building/docks when they came over from Ireland. My boss is terminall progressive and I guess when he was a kid in the 50's there used to be epic fights in the man cave that will now be my husband's studio over politics - with one exception . . .

My boss has said that us being the couple we are - the man he called Uncle Walter would get a kick out of us moving in there. I'm black(bi-racial) and my husband is 100% off the plane from Italy. Walter was very anti racism - all the Foran's are (goes back to the Edge/Harding influence). He'd get a kick out of that - and that puts a twinkle in my eye. And so would have Aunt Anne.

You walk into this house and it just feels good - remnants of laughter and kindness everywhere.
