my house made noises I've never heard it make before. I think it was the most intense storm I've ever seen except for maybe the freak November hailstorm last year.

(1,925 posts)What was happening to your home? I was thinking maybe strong winds .... Good Luck, keep safe..

(8,462 posts)a somewhat typical MN thunderstorm blew through, but was more intense than any i had ever seen. My bathroom exhaust vent was making odd noises due to the outlet pipe being impacted heavily by rain drops and strong winds. Lots of trees down around the area tonight and a day or so ago. Maybe we're in for a bumpy ride this summer.

(53,093 posts)I'm on my phone now. The storm last night sounded worse though.

(8,462 posts)in fact yesterday's wasn't even so bad in my neighborhood based on what i'm seeing in comparison with other areas. Maybe hundreds of trees down?

(115,932 posts)It went out just before 8:00 last night. After it got dark I started wondering how much of my neighborhood had lost power, so I got in the car and drove around (not a good idea, as it turned out). I discovered that a big chunk of south Minneapolis was out, and there were trees and parts of trees down everywhere. Whole blocks had been taped off because trees had fallen and you couldn't drive down the street. It was very spooky - no lights anywhere, so you couldn't see the trees in the street til you got pretty close. It then occurred to me that there might be power lines lying around, so I picked my way home and, with nothing else to do, went to bed. I woke up just now when my lights and TV came back on.
This storm was a doozy.
And it's still raining.

(24,931 posts)and supposedly won't have it until Wednesday.
Our power goes out every summer. We have the most f'ed up grid here.

(115,932 posts)Maybe it's overloaded. I rarely lose power (Kingfield neighborhood); this is the first time in several years. In the past it's always been an exploding transformer and the juice is back within hours. I've never lost power from a storm before, but when that wind came up all of a sudden just before 8:00, all hell really did break lose. It looked like hurricane footage. I had to shut all my windows because it was raining sideways from all directions.
Got an email from Xcel Energy (I keep wanting to say NSP), they said 505,000 people lost power in this one. And we might still get more storms.
Good luck with your power situation - you might want to find other digs for a few days if you can, because hot humid weather without even a fan really sucks. Or blows. Or neither.

(24,931 posts)but we finally got power back yesterday. We went to a hotel in Bloomington to cool off for two days.

Our power is back on but according to the news over 200K are still out.
My truck is underneath a tree. I watched two trees go down at that 8 pm wind gust. I consider myself lucky; I was about to go find my brother who got caught driving to guide him in. Anyone in the cab would have been killed. Waiting about a minute made all of the difference.
My brother did make it home about ten minutes later. He had parked under a bridge but cell service was intermittent so he couldn't call.

(39,215 posts)place - big trees. Power was out for at least 24 hours. I told my great grandchildren that they were not back in the good old days. No tv, no lights, candles, unable to cook on electric range, etc. The little 2 year old got mad at me because I would not turn on the tv.
question everything
(47,556 posts)Lots of trees down and the sound of chainsaw everywhere.
Our Cottonwood is soft so branches always break and, at least, we can trim them manually and take them to the yard that the City of Plymouth provides. But this morning large areas were without power, including traffic light. For a change, even in traffic, Minnesotans were "nice."
Byerly was operating with auxiliary generator but everything else was closed. Feel bad for grocery stores and restaurants where they may have to toss a lot of food.
No chance of having "normal" weather, I suppose...
Sigh..

(28,089 posts)and even Comcast has continued to function so I have TV and internet.
My windows face south and what amazed me during last night's downpour was that the wind was blowing from west to east so hard that my windows weren't getting wet at all.
MNBrewer
(8,462 posts)that hardly ever happens.usually it's from the west or southwest.

(53,093 posts)But I do have electricity. There are trees down everywhere. One was blocking the Ford Pkwy bridge this morning.
