Sushi restaurant owners face multiple embezzlement, tax fraud charges
The owners of Sushi Samurai, Inc. in West Bloomfield Township were charged with multiple counts of embezzlement and filing false tax returns Friday, April 21.
Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette accuses owners Christina Chang Hyun, 51, and Dong Hyun Chang, 46, of Orchard Lake, of embezzling over $170,000 in sales tax, and underreporting their income by over $100,000.
A joint investigation by the Department of Attorney General and Department of Treasury showed Sushi Samurais records to be significantly higher than those reported to the state.
The pair are accused of using illegal zapper software to delete sales from their records. Schuettes office reported the Changs allegedly embezzled over $170,000 by deleting thousands of sales tax receipts.
Additionally, $2.5 million in sales were never reported or accounted for between 2012-2016, according to Schuette.
