Governor eyes taxpayer refund after nearly $300M discovered in account

In the equivalent of finding some money in the pocket of the winter coat you hadn’t put on in months, the state has discovered it has nearly $300 million more than it thought to put into the general fund.

Gov. Mitch Daniels said an auditor for the State Department of Revenue discovered that some corporate taxes, being paid by electronic check, had been sitting in an account and, because of a programming error, had not been properly attributed to the state general fund. The checks had been cashed, the money was earning interest and the state knew it had the money; it just wasn’t added in to the state’s main checking account total.

Daniels announced the windfall in a jovial mood, standing before a “Charlie Brown” Christmas tree as he noted that “Christmas came early” and flashing a Monopoly card as he compared this to one of the game’s cards that tell players: “Bank error in your favor.”

Democrats found it anything but funny. Senate Minority Leader Vi Simpson, D-Ellettsville, noted that in the past few years the governor has cut public school funding by $300 million from what the legislature appropriated, as the sour economy shrunk state revenues. Those cuts resulted in some districts in layoffs and program cuts.

Who would have guessed, Mitch Daniels lies and cuts education by 300 million and the 300 million needed to pay for education is found in a "lost" account. I'm so sick of this bull crap from Bush Jr.'s office, I can only hope Mike Dence does not become governor because if he does, we are all fucked. Sorry for the language but that is the only word to describe it.

Actually I'm sure it will happen in the States with new repub Governors. WI had no short fall to begin with after Doyle. Walker made that up - so when new revenue shows up, it's no surprise. In fact I seem to remember they did find some that just about equaled the short fall...

These vile creatures are killing people with their bullshit and they are not ever going to stop until we are all slaves and them our masters. Cutting education makes us all dumber, cutting taxes makes them all richer, student loans put us all in debt, makes corps huge profits, it's a never ending cycle of Russian roulette with us at the head of the barrel and them pulling the trigger in a fully loaded gun all the time

the closing of mental institutions is putting patients into inadequate facilities
and homeless shelters. The states bid for the new Toyota plant is lost to
Canada. Why? Not the lack of right-to-work or any tax breaks. The cost
of providing health care costs does not enter the picure in Canada, Wake
up people. The wool being pulled over our eyes is 80% cotton.
