Florida ranked below average as a place to retire

Forget everything you thought about Florida as a retirement haven. We're barely middle of the road, a new analysis concludes.

The Sunshine State ranks 28th of the 50 states in providing the best conditions for seniors, according to a study released Monday by consumer website Bankrate.com, based in North Palm Beach.

Who's best? Wyoming.

Florida gets dinged for the 12th-highest crime rate in the nation and the 16th-worst health care. Bankrate assessed those factors along with the cost of living, taxes and weather.

Sure, Wyoming has snow, but it also has low crime, taxes and cost of living, the website concluded.

Economist Sean Snaith will take Florida over Wyoming any day.
