Online voter registration gains momentum in Florida

TALLAHASSEE —

Florida would become the 25th state to allow people to register to vote online under one of a series of voting proposals awaiting consideration by the Legislature.

It’s an idea Democrats have pushed for years without success. Now Republicans are also supporting it — but only after the 2016 presidential election...Gov. Rick Scott and his administration have not taken a position on the issue. Scott has cited the potential for voter fraud by noncitizens signing up to vote. But he recently dropped an appeal of a federal court ruling that said his administration’s 2012 purge of potential noncitizens from the rolls violated federal law...

...Florida has a long track record of controversy in its handling of elections. A series of lawsuits followed a decision by the Legislature in 2011 to limit dates and times of early voting, but in response to intense criticism, lawmakers expanded maximum early voting days and locations the next year.

The state has one of the nation’s most restrictive voter registration systems, prohibiting people from registering fewer than 29 days before an election.

But I do appreciate your information. There are a few "very good" Dems from Florida who also contribute. I've lived here a long time and have seen this state go way off the rails in so many ways. My husband was born in Florida but we were both Army Brats and I always called myself a "Heinz 57" citizen! Now after so many years I suppose I would be called a native.

I remember when Bob Graham was Governor, then Senator & of course Walkin' Lawton who were a little to the right of me, but I had much more in common with them than "finger in the wind" Bill Nelson!

Don't know if you're new here or not, if so WELCOME! I've been a member since 2004 and used to post almost daily, but now I find I have to take long breaks because so much distresses and depresses me! I'm a Boomer, got tired of being attacked by DLC types but easily recognize the names of those who share my beliefs and have my respect. Thankful that they never left and keep me informed in so many ways.

Thanks again!

It means that the stories that I find and post are not in vain. I am far too young to remember Bob Graham as Governor of Florida but I remember Lawton Chiles somewhat (I'm 32 by the way). I believe he cut funding for schools which meant that my days at summer school (remember that?) were over. As a kid I was estatic the first few days until the cartoons were over and I had to settle for Golden Girls reruns and game shows like press your luck on our illegal cable. As for Bill Nelson I cringe at the day that man retires since more than likely another Marco Rubio will more than likely take his place.

As for why this place turned upside down we really have to look at the media first and foremost. My days as a driver for a small company took me to many places in Florida. From Bradenton to Sebring and all the way to Melborne the people in those towns were very nice and welcoming. The biggest thing they all had in common was Fox News and how they believed that it was the truth. Heck, my own boss at the time listened to Fox and was an avid Rush Listener. Now that I work in a new place since the last one was taken by the Bush economy I spend some of my time convicing coworkers that I get along with that Fixed news is not their friend. I've managed to turn a few but there is so much work to do. One thing that doesn't help is those high definition ads from the Republicans portraying Democrats in a negative light months before the election season finally starts.

Its nice to hear from someone who's been here a while since the first time I signed up I did it to comment on the stories. I used to comment on a website called gocomics but the right wing admins there made it impossible to have a normal conversation with anyone (another guy on that website exiled here as well). Now if I find something Florida related I will post it here. Just started doing that and since you responded I will do my best to keep this place informed to the best of my ability. Apologies for the long read but I felt it necessary to state a bit of myself. It is a pleasure meeting you and hope to hear from you again.
