Berkeley (CA) council delays plan to fund sex changes

Berkeley's City Council postponed on Tuesday a plan to pay for sex reassignment surgery for city employees.

The city manager pulled the item off the agenda pending further research. The proposal returns to the City Council on Feb. 15.

The plan would have set aside $20,000 a year to pay up front for male-to-female and female-to-male surgeries, a cheaper option than including gender reassignment in the city's two health insurance policies, staff said.
