Things happened, so I didn't get to go to Bisbee. Thanks for posting my favorite part of the drive...the tunnel just before you roll into my favorite town.
Great song.

3. Bisbee. One of the COOLEST places in AZ by far. At least stop by and SEE The Shady Dell...

... a campground with 10 vintage (stationary) travel trailers (one's a bus and one's a small
drydocked yacht) for nightly rentals. i'm confident in saying that you won't be disappointed
if you book ahead (recommended) and stay a night or so ($90-120/night max occup 2 no
kids/pets). It's about 5-10 mins this side of Bisbee -- right along the way.
.
Ask them if Dot's Diner is still there -- dynamite food onsite, but I don't see mention of it anymore.

4. It may be "cool" now, but it's got an ugly labor history,

(see Wickipedia for "deportations&quot and frankly, when I was there 20 years ago, before I knew about its history and definitely before it became "cool", I found the people running the mine tours behaving like a bunch of fascists.

5. C'mon now!!! A mining company behaving in a fascist manner? That's a first for Arizona...

... perhaps for the country.

And that ugly illegal deportation history was, c'MON -- 95 years ago.
Certainly the current residents may have some second thoughts about that
behavior now.

The town itself is a laidback, friendly, fun, extremely arts- and GLBT-friendly
community full of funky shops, bistros, galleries and cool people. I believe the
town was an artist/hippie magnet/Mecca during the 60's and 70's.
.
I'm not convinced that you were presenting the present-day town in a
broadbrushed manner due to the behavior of a major local industry, but it
kinda feels that way.
.
To illustrate that company towns don't necessarily reflect company ideologies,
Jefferson County, CO contains the headquarters of one of the most infamous
union-busting companies in modern times, Coors. Yet, in 2008, the county voted
55% for Barack Obama.
.
I have never been to San Francisco, but I think of Bisbee as a tiny little San
Francisco in Southern Arizona. And we can use all the San Francisco that we
can get in a state so devastatingly tarnished and tainted by the likes of Brewer
and Arpaio.
.
And it's OK to refer to it as cool without the quotation marks. Cool is a pretty
"cool" word.
.
Oops.
