One of the year’s more intriguing new dramas, graced with the superb production values that are by now a hallmark of Apple TV+’s output. Set in a “retro-futuristic” world of idealised 1950s smalltown US styling – think Happy Days or Pleasantville on steroids but with robots doing all the drudge work – Billy Crudup (who won an Emmy for The Morning Show) plays eternally optimistic Jack Billings. He’s a silver-tongued regional manager for the Brightside Corporation, leading a team of travelling salesmen selling timeshares on the Moon. That all is not as it seems – regarding either Brightside or the perfect lunar life Jack tells his clients he enjoys on his trips to the stars – quickly becomes evident as the layers of his life are peeled back before our eyes.

We’re in the Fifties – that all-American decade – and slap-dab in the middle of Middle America’s flatlands. Here in small neon-lit towns linked by long straight roads, a company called Brightside plies its trade hawking timeshares. You can tell we are in the realm of retro-futuristic science fiction because half the travelling sales force are black and race is never mentioned. Just as fantastically, beautiful cars hover along without wheels while gliding robots perform all manner of societal functions: delivering mail, staffing the bar, crooning at parties, even policing the streets...
