(149,308 posts)I didn't think I was going to succeed tonight, the clouds were so thick. But then they dispersed and I could see!

(149,308 posts)Not orange at all here, since it was higher in the sky than it was for you. I love seeing those colors but they don't happen often since I'm blocked from the horizon by a lot of trees and hills.

(2,654 posts)My schedule tomorrow evening will be more favorable for getting photos. During the last moon cycle, clear skies allowed me to get sharp pictures on six nights.
Thanks for sharing your picture. I am always interested in the current moon phase. By the way, there is an interesting YouTube channel which intermittently streams telescope images of the moon. The channel operator is from the Tampa, Florida, area. He is also a talented songwriter, singer and musician who broadcasts his songs along with the video stream. I think that occasionally fixating on moon images can help stir creative impulses.

(149,308 posts)I am sorry that your camera wouldn't allow you to get good photos. Were you in manual? I never used to use it, and now I use it all the time!
Good luck tomorrow night! I hope to see your photos.

(4,969 posts)The contrast and texture is superb. What rig do you use?

(149,308 posts)I use my Nikon D3200 with my zoom lens 18--400mm by Tamron.
Of course the camera's F stop is all the way open at 6.3 and this time I set the shutter speed to 1/80 second. This seemed to have the best detail of the half dozen photos I took. And I was all the way out at 400mm!
I also used my cable release and tripod.

(4,969 posts)Went looking for the exact settings I used for my D7000 a few years ago when I managed to get some good pics of a full moon. Still have a couple hard drives to search. I'm certain I used a longer shutter speed and bracketing around the on the F stop, seems I tweaked the ISO, too. Had my 105-200 cranked all the way out, tripod and remote, but still had to hold my breath and not look at the rig the wrong way. The atmosphere was just clear enough to help bring it all together. I like the quiet excitement of the process.
18-400! What a range!
I put a note in my camera bag with the settings you used here. Not sure when I'll get around to it, but really appeals to get out and look up with a lens sometime soon. If I find those shots of mine I will post one just to compare how much richer the darks are in your image. I just love that edge along the inside of the moon.
And! thanks for sharing your settings. My brain and heart really needed something nice to settle on for a bit.

(149,308 posts)When I went shopping for a new zoom, I knew I had to have a longer range. I was going to buy a Nikkor lens, but they don't make them in this range. But Tamron does and that determined which lens to get. The 400 really pulls the scene in! It makes me very happy.
I have not yet learned how to manipulate the ISO. Nor do I know what it really does. Someday I'll study that.
