Related: About this foruma contest idea of a different sort
i had a weird idea for an extra photography contest and im wondering what people thought.
my idea is I upload a picture to some site that is easy to download the whole picture from, not a shrunk version. the whole 5mb or so or larger.
then the contest would be post processing. do whatevert you want to the picture whether its turning it into b/w,just simple edits, false color whatever. but everyone would start with the same shot.
what do people think?

(22,759 posts)sorta like when someone starts the alphabet thread... we just won't have an official vote unless you want to create a poll

(19,459 posts)I'm trying to learn Nik Silver Efex Pro 2, and this would be a great project. It would also help me learn by seeing what processing techniques others do.

(19,459 posts)In a previous thread you mentioned your use of the control points in the Nik program, so I watched the intro vid on that subject. I've got a long way to go in understanding what makes a good B&W photo, but that control point function looks like fun. I'm still working with the free demo but I liked it so much that I went ahead and purchased the disk; should be here tomorrow.
Certainly not entirely happy with this shot, but I'm intrigued by the potentials offered by the Nik program:

(4,483 posts)A way control points could be used in that shot is in the wake of the boat if you want to really accentuate it more, you can drop a point and adjust the structure.

(19,459 posts)There are several tweaks I'd like to try, soon as I get more time. Just started tearing out carpets in the house, getting it ready to do a coloring acid wash on the concrete slab, followed by two coats of industrial grade 2-part satin polyurethane, followed by a waxing. Miles to go before I sleep...well, several days anyway, with a little sleeping scattered throughout.

(8,039 posts)and you do know that new ideas are always welcome and needed. We used to do non-official or better put might be not as constrained contest like stuff though without polls. More to show, compare, contrast and provide differing viewpoints in a support positive way. I'd be up for it. If you stayed away from time constraints you would probably get more people in. It is summer and busy season for many of us. A great way to learn new things, specially if people keep track of what they do as they work and share.

(36,827 posts)I'm not really big on contests in general, but I think the idea is a good one. Post processing is a big part of digital photography. Back in the film days I remember that unless you set up your own lab, you had to trust your post processing to whatever lab you took for film. Unless you had access to a professional lab that offered custom services, even simple tasks like dodging and burning were out of the reach of most amateur photographers. The tools we have today are light years ahead of the way it was even just 20 years ago. I'm not all that great with anything other than the practical aspects of post processing, but I've seen some people do some amazingly creative things.
