****** September contest theme is, Another Roadside Attraction.*******

Last edited Sun Sep 13, 2015, 01:05 PM - Edit history (1)

Entries will open on September 14, and will run for one week. Prelim voting and final voting will be three days each.

"Roadside attraction" as defined for this contest is, a small independent business along the the roadway. The more quirky and kitschy the better. Keep editing to the minimum. Enjoy

I lived in Grants Pass for 20 years or so. My 3 kids all graduated from Hidden Valley High. That's been at least 30 years ago.

Somewhere in my closet I have a box of slides I took from the sidelines at the 1977 Gladstone-Hidden Valley Class AA State Championship Football game. (I went to Gladstone, we won, yay ) Your mentioning Hidden Valley triggered that memory! I hadn't thought of that for a good twenty years.

A funny sign would suffice. There was a sign on a fence advertising "used cows." A bubblegum colored house against a blue sky would be marvelous. If you see it from the road/street, it is fair game.

took it today.
I had to shake hands, introduce myself, explain why I'm in the neighborhood, and finally worked my way to saying there was a contest coming up and I needed a photo of their attractive roadside attraction store, was it maybe please OK to take a few shots. All this is not what I usually do, I just beg forgiveness, not so much ask permission.
I'm tickled.

This place is in our town. The pharmacy has closed, but it lives on as a liquor store.

It has a big vertical conveyor for the drugs. It was pretty neat.

I got a nice shot, but I'd like to "antique" it and turn it into a vintage-looking photo befitting the subject matter.

will you be stating that you want "quirky or kitschy"?

I took the photo of the road side business I mentioned (where I had to park, gently approach, introduce myself and beg for the photo) and I am holding it in abeyance for the contest. Then I ran across another that is kitsch as kitsch can.......
So now I'm torn.

I think the photographers, and the voters, need to get back to keeping their eye on the theme a bit better. Lately I think we have lost our way at times and submitted pretty photos that are only peripherally related to the theme and have gotten away with it.
