Galaxy West

Photograph by Dan Whittaker, National Geographic Your Shot

The Milky Way arcs above an abandoned farm outside the former railroad town of Bartlett, Texas. Earth’s vast home galaxy spans 120,000 light-years from end to end.

The Milky Way is such a wonderful sight; I've never lived in a place where it was dark enough to see it.

Thank you, dear girl, for this amazing picture!

Was in the pitch black of the Australian outback. Very cool to see the band across the sky, and the southern hemisphere constellations. A memory I am not going to forget soon.

I think it was scorpius that I remember. It was when I was in the 8th grade, so it's been a while

Looks just like my place, all the way down to the barn and trees. Extremely dry, no light pollution and on a hill. Could see for many miles in every direction. Very quiet except for the sound of wind in the grass, howling or just that eerie sound a large mass of air can make, and an echo if one called out downhill. Thanks for posting this.

The only time I have ever seen the Milky Way, it was not far from this place in Buffalo Texas. I have been to so many places that were out of the way, and never again have seen this. It takes your breath away.
