A strange thing is happening to a friend's orchid

It's changing color.

This is what it's supposed to look like. Notice in the first photo the lighter orchid is still different than this one. These are all the same plant. First year this has happened.

Location is the same as last year… and the year before… and the year before.

I believe when plants change there is a reason.

The tree was somewhat exotic with only sparse foliage and branches, so lack thereof hasn't appreciably changed the light.

I won't go into a biology lesson, but since every flower develops from division of cells, it is possible that there was a mutation that occurred in this flower during development. I have seen changed in plants that have also been in the same place with the same conditions---I can think of two, a pineapple mint that reverted back to just all green instead of having white spots, and a hosta that was variegated and is now all green. It happens. And it is always cool.
