I love these peonies. They go back at least to the 1950's.

(46,436 posts)Mine are just budding now, but should be in bloom in a couple of weeks. I love the way they smell.
I have one really beautiful and healthy plant that hasn't bloomed in years, maybe because it doesn't get enough sun, but this year it has lot of little buds on it, so I'm hoping they'll swell and bloom. The nursery guys told me there might be a phosphorus deficiency, so I put out bone meal and hope that corrects the problem. It'll be cause for serious celebration if it blooms.

(18,219 posts)all from one piece of root taken from my grandmother's yard when they tore down the fire station that was next to her and it was going to be lost. A few places where they are, they never bloom either. Maybe it is the soil, because it is not sunny where the best ones are. North side of the house in the shade of the house.....all the time. I should try some phosphorus on the ones that are not happy.

(27,454 posts)I am green with envy. I love peonies, but they don't do well here. Your photos give me a much needed peony fix. 😚

(8,175 posts)I have a white one with traces of crimson in some of the inner petals. I also have a red one that hasn't bloomed yet and I just can't wait. They really are stunning flowers and so beautiful in arrangements. Your color is beautiful. I think they are one of my favorite garden flowers...but then I can't really say that...there are so many special ones.
Thank you so much for sharing!

(18,219 posts)but they are so short-lived. Alas, that one has already bit the dust. For showy, I don't think you can find a fancier flower, but because of the ephemeral nature of peonies, I cannot say that they are my favorite. Hell, I can't say a favorite---it just depends what is blooming when. Right this minute, irises are my favorite because they are beautiful and scented like grapes....or maybe it is the columbine....or the very un-beautiful allspice bush flower, just for the scent of strawberries that you smell all over the yard. Sigh.

(8,175 posts)That sounds yummy. I love the flowers that make your yard smell heavenly. I have a huge lilac bush that does a good job of that...also too short lived, and we have wild mock orange growing all over, and it is such a beautiful scent. They haven't bloomed yet, but soon.
Curmudgeoness
(18,219 posts)so it is almost time. They are heavenly. I also have lilacs, and love to cut them and bring them in the house---best air freshener in the world.
The Carolina Allspice is a bush we called the "strawberry bush" while I was growing up, not knowing what it really was. As an adult, I got curious and researched it. I will try to get some photos of the homely flower, but don't think that this is not a shrub you would like in the yard just because it doesn't look like much.

(8,175 posts)I live in shrubbery...forest and riparian zone, so it would fit right in. I'll have to look that up and see if my nursery has them.
edited to add:
I just googled it and I think it is a beautiful bush with a beautiful flower. I'm sold.

(18,219 posts)if you are anywhere near W PA, I have so many of them that I don't know what to do with them. And I have a hoarder mentality about throwing plants away, so the hedge just grows. Not the easiest shrub to transplant, and I have had several that did not take, but I also have many that did.

(8,175 posts)It would be a long drive for me. I'm in Oregon.
but I so appreciate the offer!
