This is Sitka at sunset, 9:30 p.m., on May 24.
This is on Douglas Island, across from Juneau. Back in the early 1900s, there were several mines in this location, the Treadwell mines, that employed over 2,000 people. They had all kinds of amenities for their employees, and business was booming. But then there was a very high tide one night and most of the mines flooded. No one was killed, but shortly after that, the whole operation shut down and now all that remains is ruins. Mother Nature is quick to take over when left alone. I believe this is a national historical park. I may not have my facts completely right, but if you're interested in the history, this is good reading.

This is Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, pretty much the stock photo. I've got other, more interesting shots, but I just haven't had time to do anything with them.
This is along the South Klondike Highway, very shortly after we severely overheated going up the pass out of Skagway. It is a 3,300-foot climb in about 12 miles. Absolutely brutal, especially since we were lugging along behind a big tanker and a tour bus. We made it, though. By the time we got to this lake, we were all relaxing a bit -- including our poor old, overheated truck.
This is Kluane Lake, which I believe is the largest lake in the Yukon. Both times we went by here, the lake was making fog. On our way down, it was windy and from a distance we thought the fog was dust. I took this shot on our way home, 7:30 a.m. on the 29th. (That's ice on the lake, by the way. I liked the way the fog rose off the sand.)
When I find a little time later, I'll post a gallery at my SmugMug site because I do have some pretty nice shots, and I love to do travelogs.

(6,154 posts)despite living in BC for the past 20+ years I've travelled outside the country more than I have within it (including the US here). would be great to take a trip to Alaska and the Yukon.

(46,436 posts)If you do it, take the ferries. They're really a great way to travel, not terribly expensive, and the best part is you can take your car. I believe you can pick one up in Vancouver.
Correction ... You can get the ferry in Bellingham, WA, or Prince Rupert.
