(182,884 posts)Theyd wanted to record in Jamaica because the Stoneshad just recorded there. They found it to be too violent so they moved the recording to an English farm.
Everyday the musicians would gather for breakfast and warm up, tinker around. A piece of paper would be brought to Elton with Bernies lyrics on it. Sight unseen Elton would compose the song. Every track was recorded in one take maybe two - basically live.
Fascinating documentary. Bennie and the Hets went to #1 on the Pop and R&B charts.
Side note - not on this album - there is no rhyming pattern on Rocketman. Nothing rhymes in the whole song.
Great AXS documentary on it.
This is part 1 but the other parts are available on the link.

(19,204 posts)First it was France, then Jamaica, then Montserrat (until the volcano blew it away).
Jimmy Buffet was the last to record at the Montserrat studios. The Album he recorded? "Volcano". He kept eying the Volcano while they were recording. He came up with the song, "Volcano" in about a half hour. Then the volcano actually blew.
Good times. 👍

(182,884 posts)In reading Old Gods Almost Dead there was a constant with where the Stones recorded albums. Due to the entourage that orbited around them, the local officials made it very clear that they didnt ever want them back there again.

(19,204 posts)"Keef" alone could piss-off an entire continent, let alone a single country.
That they're still alive is a testament to better living through chemistry. Still touring? Amazing.

(182,884 posts)Its a great book. From before they were all in the same room (March 17th 1961 or 62 I think) into the 90s at least.
The first night Mick took LSD they weee at a party. One of the ladies thought she saw someone lurking outside. Every said she was just paranoid. It was Scotland Yard. They came in. Both Mick and Keith got arrested. Mick had a small bit of weed in the pocket of his jacket that he honestly had probably forgotten about. While in the house the cops started opening a briefcase that was on a table. Another party attendee said he was a photographer and if they opened it up his film would be destroyed and hed sue Scotland Yard. They didnt open it. What it really had in it was more LSD, weed, and maybe Coke. Due to laws there, everyone there would have been arrested for being in the same room and gone away for a good bit of time.

(65,195 posts)Done by David Hentschel on an ARP 2500.
That is a monophonic instrument, or only one note at a time. So all those layers & chords had to be recorded one track at a time! Whew, David was busy!
I hear at least 6 different sounds, with 3 being played in chords. A dozen separate tracks? Maybe more.

Yeah, I still use my iPod. Old habits are hard to break.
