That Garden show is such a great resource for peak Zep footage. We are very lucky that the music of our youth was well documented on film, video and hi fi audio. Besides it's quality and emotional attachment, it might be another reason why it is STILL being appreciated by people today. My fathers' big band music was not so lucky. 50's music sure has fallen down a hole in recent years.
I always loved the Heartbreaker - Living Loving Maid combo growing up. It wasn't a hit, but FM radio loved it in my town.
This fabulous edit is a little discombobulating for guitar players. It chock full of B-roll from other songs in the show. It makes for great eye candy, but his guitar hand moves don't match the song being played. Page is definitely an absolute master with flare, spirit, writing and musical choices.. but man could he be sloppy. It just goes to show- it is not always about mechanical chops and ultra precise execution. It is about the spirit and that moment. A few "clams" never stopped Jimmy. For guitar players learning the studio version.. Do you include the clinkers in your version?
Another thing that struck me is how close they played together - physically. This is Mad Garden and they are right on top of each other. The back line is also pretty close to Bonham's kit. This is probably a relic of the time. Big rock shows kinda evolved. I would probably credit the Stones later for spreading it out and using the big stage to reach the people in the nose bleeds.
thx for link and post!
