Really though, I think Maiden left NWOBHM behind when Bruce joined. Then they just became metal, or even progressive metal.

I do do sub-genres.

Better label than Death Metal, Nu Metal or Hair Metal for sure, but still seems so stiffly formal.

It sounds almost like a Time Life documentary book set. If you are old enough to remember that (cough) reference

Metal historians, if such a thing even exists, will give a nod to those bands. But they were sort of a footnote. You picked the best two in my opinion. I tried to get into Tygers of Pan Tang on account of John Sykes, but really couldn't.

Metal bands generally don't like subgenre labels either. The really good ones don't fit cleanly into any. Black Sabbath could do jazz swing and Van Halen could do boogie woogie.
