New knitter needs some help please.

I tried teaching myself to knit via Youtube videos and that did not work out great so I joined a class to learn correct techniques.

However this is not a traditional class, it is more a social group of experienced knitters with an instructor that offers support but not structured lessons.

In any case, I am knitting a really simple beginner pattern - it is a shawl with a hood but we never discussed Right side and Wrong side and I have no idea how to tell.

It doesn't really matter in the original pattern because it is basically a straight K stitch but I was getting bored with the straight knit look so decided to change rows 2-5 to stockinette to mix things up a little.

Now I have the correct stockinette one one side of the shawl and the wrong side of the stockinette on the next repeat of the pattern and I don't know how to fix it!

Grrrr

This is the pattern:
The first section is a K1P1 for the entire row and then repeat for 4 inches
Then Rows 1-6 knit stitches
Then Row 7 K3 *yo K2Tog repeat until the last two K2 stitches

Repeat 1-7 for 50 inches leaving the last 4 inches K1P1

So after 15 inches of this I decided to K the first row after the yo K2Tog and then
Row 2 K
Row 3 P
Row 4 K
Row 5 P
Row 6 K
Then back to the K3 *yo K2Tog * K2

Repeat the stockinette style for 15 inches
Then I was going to do seed stitch along the same idea

Hope this is not TLDR or that it makes sense.
In any case now that I am thinking about it I am wondering if every time I start knitting at K3 if that is the right side?

I will be sad if I need to take out 10 rows of stitches since the only way I know how to unknit is 1 stitch at a time and the cast on was 63 stitches.

Thanks to anyone who read this long post.

Just take out the row 6 Knit and then go back to the *yo K2Tog * K2 and on from there, that might get you back on the right sequence.

Enjoy!!!

Love to see people knitting, been doing it forever.
You have 4 inches of ribbing, K1P1, then a row of yo, k2tog,then garter stitch, k every row. You did stockinette in place of the garter, which is fine. Generally, knitting patterns are even rows are right side, odd are wrong side. So, your K3 *yo, K2tog* K2 row would be wrong side.
And sure, your six rows between the yo, k2 tog rows can be whatever you want.
Really, the more you knit, the more fun it is.

5. Not help so much as where to find help,

Knittinghelp.com and Ravelry.com. the people there are amazing. Ask as many questions as needed... As with DU, Ravelry has layers of forums and groups. Just look around, you might be sorry you went down this rabbit hole but you will learn and it's fun. Cheers.

Sometimes ya just gotta grip it and rip it (to borrow from another hobby).

Mais c’est la guerre, n’est-ce pas?

12. What you described in your OP is not a class

by any definition of a class. It sounds more like it's just a regular knitting meet-up, which is also nice.

Hope you do soon get the help you need.

learned more by Youtube, blog postings and trial and error. I assume if it was structured the topic of RS WS would have come up before 4 weeks in.

The people are mostly about 20 years or more older than me. Lots of talk about hip and knee surgeries but they are encouraging and kind. , a nice group of people.

13. You've already gotten advice as to how to proceed in this thread.

I will just add this:

If you want to take out some of the work you've already done, wait until class - have someone with experience help you. It's very easy to screw up, especially with those "yo, k2tog" rows.

14. I think I'm only going to take out the last 4 rows which I am fine with, that will leave one K

row left after the yo K2tog. I feel fairly comfortable unknitting now - I think I have almost done as much unknitting as knitting.

I think I can decide for myself which is the rs or ws because the garter stitch looks pretty much the same on both sides.

One person noted that if I use the long tail cast on which I did, the tail will be on the right side when I am on the right side. Someone else said the odd rows are always RS and another even rows are RS. So if my new attempt doesn't work I will wait until class to move forward.
