written by the late John D. MacDonald, a prolific and successful author of dozens of crime and suspense novels. MacDonald is best known for his series Travis McGee.

A remake of The Executioners, also titled Cape Fear, was filmed in 1991 by Martin Scorsese and starred Robert De Niro and Nick Nolte. Mitchum and Gregory Peck appeared in cameos.
