Trivia: Rosalind Russell broke her ankle in the first take of the scene where she comes flying down the stairs in the gown with the capri pants and shooting had to be delayed until she recovered.

Trivia: For the scene where Dennis Hopper stumbles onto the court drunk during the sectional game, Hopper wanted a 10-second notice before the director called action. He spun around for 10 seconds, allowing him to stagger onto the court and appear drunk. He remembered James Dean in Giant (1956) asking George Stevens for 30 seconds so he could spin around to better feel the inebriation.

Trivia: Gene Hackman and David Anspaugh clashed throughout most of the production. "Gene had me on the verge of a nervous breakdown," Anspaugh told Vulture. "He gave me my first anxiety attack: One morning I woke up and I couldn't walk; the room was spinning. I thought every day on the film was going to be my last because Gene's agent was trying to get me fired." According to Anspaugh, the only thing that saved his job was the dailies.

The uncredited radio announcer is Peter Graves, future Mission: Impossible (1966) and also the pilot from Airplane! (1980).

Trivia: Bing Crosby appeared in the film because, at the time, he was a partial owner (approximately 15%) of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Trivia: Donna Corcoran, who played Bridget, was the sister of Disney child star Kevin Corcoran. It was her film debut.

Trivia: Baseball Hall of Famer Pie Traynor, Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman from 1920-1937, has a cameo toward the end of the film. The ballplayer-turned manager-turned sports announcer plays a Pirates coach and also served as the film's technical sports advisor.

Trivia: The final scene of the so-called "American" version of this movie had Barbara and Anne Morton waiting for Guy to call on the telephone. Sir Alfred Hitchcock wanted the phone in the foreground to dominate the shot, emphasizing the importance of the call, but the limited depth-of-field of contemporary movie camera lenses made it difficult to get both phone and women in focus. So Hitchcock had an oversized phone constructed and placed in the foreground. Anne reaches for the big phone, but actually answers a regular one. Hitchcock explained that "I did that on one take, by moving in on Anne so that the big phone went out of the frame as she reached for it. Then a grip put a normal-sized phone on the table, where she picked it up."

Trivia: The stunt where the man crawled under the carousel was not done with trick photography. Sir Alfred Hitchcock claimed that this was the most dangerous stunt ever performed under his direction, and he would never allow it to be done again.
