Dir: Robert Mulligan Cast: Gregory Peck, John Megna, Frank Overton
Runtime: 131 mins Genre: Drama Rating: TV-PG CC: Y

Oscar wins:

ACTOR -- Gregory Peck {"Atticus Finch"}
ART DIRECTION (Black-and-White) -- Art Direction: Alexander Golitzen, Henry Bumstead; Set Decoration: Oliver Emert
WRITING (Screenplay--based on material from another medium) -- Horton Foote

Oscar nominations:

Trivia: The first scene that Gregory Peck shot showed him returning home from his character's law office while his children ran to greet him. Author Harper Lee was a guest on the set that day, and Peck noticed her crying after the scene was filmed. He asked Lee why she was crying, and she responded that Peck had looked just like her late father, the model for Atticus. Lee explained that Peck even had a little round stomach like her father's. "That's not a pot belly, Harper," Peck told her, "That's great acting."

Trivia: Mary Badham (Scout) and Gregory Peck (Atticus) became close during filming, and kept in contact for the rest of his life. Peck always called her "Scout", her character role, while Badham called Peck "Atticus".

Trivia: Brock Peters, who played Tom Robinson in the film, delivered Gregory Peck's eulogy on the date of his funeral and burial, Monday, June 16, 2003.

A skipper-for-hire's romance with a beautiful drifter is complicated by his growing involvement with the French resistance.
Dir: Howard Hawks Cast: Humphrey Bogart, Walter Brennan, Lauren Bacall
Runtime: 100 mins Genre: Romance Rating: TV-G CC: Y

Trivia: Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall fell in love during production. Director Howard Hawks afterward said that it was actually Bacall's character Marie (Slim) that Bogart had fallen for, "so she had to keep playing it the rest of her life." However, it has also been said that Hawks---who was a notorious womanizer and who had a fling with Dolores Moran during the shooting of the film--was jealous and frustrated that Bacall had fallen for Bogart and not for Hawks himself. He even threatened to sell her contract to Monogram, a lowly Poverty Row studio.

Trivia: At the funeral for her husband, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall put a whistle in his coffin. It was a reference to the famous line in the film where she says to him: "You know how to whistle, don't you? You just put your lips together and blow."

&pp=ygUWdGhlIGJhbmQgd2Fnb24gdHJhaWxlcg%3D%3D

A Broadway artiste turns a faded film star's comeback vehicle into an artsy flop.
Dir: Vincente Minnelli Cast: Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse, Oscar Levant
Runtime: 112 mins Genre: Musical Rating: TV-G CC: Y

Oscar nominations:

COSTUME DESIGN (Color) -- Mary Ann Nyberg
MUSIC (Scoring of a Musical Picture) -- Adolph Deutsch
WRITING (Story and Screenplay) -- Betty Comden, Adolph Green

Trivia: Nanette Fabray stated that Oscar Levant was difficult to work with. Whenever something would go wrong or he would make a mistake, he would blame whoever was around. This included stage hands, other actors, lighting technicians, or whoever was handy. She said that, since she was usually closest, she caught the brunt of it. Following a botched take, he again blamed her for something. She lost her temper and told him off using unladylike language. Everyone on the set applauded. After that, he was much easier to work with.

Trivia: Betty Comden and Adolph Green made the characters played by Nanette Fabray and Oscar Levant a married couple because they felt that the audiences would not accept a male/female writing team who weren't married to each other, even though the characters were based on Comden and Green, who were not married to each other.

Trivia: Ginger Rogers met Fred Astaire in New York in the early 1930s and they dated briefly. She saw him perform in the original Broadway production of this show. She was enraptured by his dancing with Tilly Losch and wrote, "If I had known that I was going to be Fred's partner in a matter of months, I would have paid closer attention to each move and pause."

2:00 PM Spartacus (1960)

&pp=ygURc3BhcnRhY3VzIHRyYWlsZXI%3D

The slaves of ancient Rome revolt and are quashed.
Dir: Stanley Kubrick Cast: Kirk Douglas, Laurence Olivier, Jean Simmons
Runtime: 182 mins Genre: Epic Rating: TV-PG CC: Y

Oscar wins:

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE -- Peter Ustinov {"Batiatus"}
ART DIRECTION (Color) -- Art Direction: Alexander Golitzen, Eric Orbom; Set Decoration: Russell A. Gausman, Julia Heron
CINEMATOGRAPHY (Color) -- Russell Metty
COSTUME DESIGN (Color) -- Valles, Bill Thomas

Oscar nominations
FILM EDITING -- Robert Lawrence
MUSIC (Music Score of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture) -- Alex North

Trivia: Stanley Kubrick was brought in as director after Kirk Douglas had a major falling out with the original director, Anthony Mann. According to Sir Peter Ustinov, the salt mines sequence was the only footage shot by Mann.

Trivia: The original version included a scene where Marcus Licinius Crassus (Sir Laurence Olivier) attempts to seduce Antoninus (Tony Curtis). The Production Code Administration and the Legion of Decency both objected. At one point Geoffrey Shurlock, representing the censors, suggested it would help if the reference in the scene to a preference for oysters or snails was changed to truffles and artichokes. In the end the scene was cut, but it was put back in for the 1991 restoration. However, the soundtrack had been lost in the meantime and the dialogue had to be dubbed. Curtis was able to redo his lines, but Olivier had died. Dame Joan Plowright, his widow, remembered that Sir Anthony Hopkins had done a dead-on impression of Olivier and she mentioned this to the restoration team. They approached Hopkins and he agreed to voice Olivier's lines in that scene. Hopkins is thanked in the credits for the restored version.

5:30 PM The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)

&pp=ygUgdHJlYXN1cmUgb2Ygc2llcnJhIG1hZHJlIHRyYWlsZXI%3D

Three prospectors fight off bandits and each other after striking it rich in the Mexican mountains.
Dir: John Huston Cast: Humphrey Bogart, Walter Huston, Tim Holt
Runtime: 126 mins Genre: Adventure Rating: TV-PG CC: Y

Oscar wins:

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE -- Walter Huston {"Howard"}
DIRECTING -- John Huston
WRITING (Screenplay) -- John Huston

Oscar nominations:

BEST MOTION PICTURE -- Warner Bros.

Trivia: Though the daily rushes impressed Warner Bros., Jack L. Warner nearly went berserk with the weekly expenditures. After viewing one scene, Warner threw up his hands and shouted to producer Henry Blanke, "Yeah, they're looking for gold all right - mine!" During another screening of rushes, Warner watched Dobbs stumble along in the desert for water. Warner jumped up in the middle of the scene and shouted to a gaggle of executives, "If that s.o.b. doesn't find water soon I'll go broke!" Warner had reason to be upset. John Huston and Blanke led him to believe that the film would be an easy picture to make and that they would be in and out of Mexico in a matter of weeks. Because Warner was notorious for not actually reading scripts, he assumed the film was a B-movie Western. As the full extent of Huston's plans became apparent, Warner nearly blew a gasket. He was especially unhappy with the way the film ended, arguing that audiences wouldn't accept it. Ironically it appeared Warner was correct after the movie's original box office returns. But the film was a huge critical success and, in its many re-releases, it more than earned its original investment of $3 million.

Trivia: Walter Huston, father of director John Huston, won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. John won for Best Director. This was the first father/son win. John Huston stated that working with his father on this picture and his dad's subsequent Oscar win were among the favorite moments of his life.

Trivia: Humphrey Bogart's portrayal of 'Dobbs' in this film was cited by Steven Spielberg as the main inspiration for the character of Indiana Jones.

A basketball coach gets one last chance at redemption at a rural Indiana high school.
Dir: David Anspaugh Cast: Gene Hackman, Barbara Hershey, Dennis Hopper
Runtime: 115 mins Genre: Drama Rating: TV-14 CC: Y

Oscar nominations:

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE -- Dennis Hopper {"Shooter"}
MUSIC (Original Score) -- Jerry Goldsmith

Trivia: The movie was renamed "Best Shot" in some international markets because most people outside the US wouldn't know what a Hoosier was.

10:15 PM Knute Rockne--All American (1940)

&pp=ygUUa251dGUgcm9ja25lIHRyYWlsZXI%3D

Biography of the famed Notre Dame coach and his fight to "win one for the Gipper."
Dir: Lloyd Bacon Cast: Pat O'Brien, Gale Page, Ronald Reagan
Runtime: 98 mins Genre: Drama Rating: TV-G CC: Y

Trivia: The unnamed "disease" that killed George Gipp wasn't a disease, it was actually complications from strep throat.

Trivia: James Cagney, eager to break out of gangster roles, lobbied hard for the part of Knute Rockne. But Cagney had signed a petition in support of the anti-Catholic Republican government in the Spanish Civil War. Notre Dame had control over all aspects of the filming and would not okay Cagney for the role.

Trivia: George Reeves, who has a short speaking role as an egotistical football player late in the film, also appears much earlier. He is one of the team members seen waiting in the hallway as Knute Rockne leaves George Gipp's hospital room following Gipp's death. Reeves is standing with his back to the camera so the viewer won't recognize him later as that other player, who was on Rockne's team almost a decade after Gipp's death in 1920.
