But believes himself to be a genius. And a self aggrandizing liar." And costume designer Dorothy Jeakins is described as a "...consummate bore...She makes me want to fart in public or pee on the carpet...There are worse people in the world I suppose. Like Jack the Ripper."

Trivia: The first of nine movies made together by Warner Brothers' romantic couple Olivia de Havilland and Errol Flynn.

Trivia: Basil Rathbone was acknowledged to be the finest fencing actor in Hollywood. He studied fencing in his youth and, during his military service during World War I, twice won the British Army fencing championship. However, since he always played the villain in costume dramas, he generally lost his duels, such as to Errol Flynn in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), to Danny Kaye in The Court Jester (1955) and to Tyrone Power in The Mark of Zorro (1940). Rathbone did win his duel with John Barrymore in Romeo and Juliet (1936), his only screen victory and to Eugene Pallette as a friar in "The Mark of Zorro".

Trivia: In his autobiography "My Wicked, Wicked Ways" Errol Flynn, a notorious prankster, states that he played many pranks on Olivia de Havilland. One of them was leaving a dead snake in her underwear. She found it when she went to put them on. After that she lived in of his pranks.

Trivia: Errol Flynn did not wear a wig and let his naturally curly hair grow for the role. The producers were worried about it becoming unruly during the climactic fight scenes, so it was decided that he wear a bandanna.

And director Nicholas Meyer's first choice was his girlfriend, Shelley Hack, but she reportedly didn't want to become famous due to her boyfriend's "help". She did, however, accept a small role as a docent at the museum H.G. Wells transports to.

Trivia: Frank Wills, the security guard who discovered the 1972 break-in at the Watergate complex, plays himself. He had been fired from his Watergate job a few days after the break-in, though no reason was given. The one day he spent (in 1975) playing himself in this movie was his first day's work since being fired.

Trivia: To prepare for their roles, Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman hung out in the Washington Post newsroom for several weeks, observing reporters and attending staff meetings. Once, when Redford was standing in a hallway, a group of high school students came through on a tour of the newspaper offices. The students immediately started taking pictures of Redford with their pocket cameras. At that point, Bob Woodward walked by. Redford told the students, "Wait a minute! Here's the real Bob Woodward, the guy I'm playing in the movie! Don't you want to take a picture of him?" The students said no, and walked on. Hoffman also recalled that he had been asked by the paper's science reporter to fetch a new typewriter ribbon. Due to Hoffman's long hair and casual dress, the science reporter had mistaken him for a copy boy. By contrast, Jason Robards only spent one day in the Washington Post newsroom, observing his counterpart, Ben Bradlee. Afterwards, according to Bradlee's widow, Sally Quinn, Robards "left and never came back...but he absolutely *got* Ben!"

Trivia: In real life, Judy Hoback was the bookkeeper from the Committee to Re-Elect the President (CRP, also nicknamed "CREEP&quot who gave Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward crucial information about the White House slush fund payouts. Jane Alexander met with Hoback to prepare for her role in the film. Also, the filmmakers rented out Hoback's former home in Georgetown, D.C., and shot the scenes with Alexander and Dustin Hoffman in the actual living room where Hoback had first met with Bernstein.

Trivia: The telephone number that Robert Redford dials for the White House is the real number of the White House Switchboard: 202-456-1414.

Trivia: The scene where Regan projectile vomits at Father Karras only required one take. The vomit was intended to hit Jason Miller in the chest, but the plastic tubing misfired, hitting him in the face. His reaction of shock and disgust while wiping away the vomit is genuine, and Miller admitted in an interview that he was very angered by this mistake.

Trivia: Due to death threats against Linda Blair from religious zealots who believed the film "glorified Satan", Warner Bros. had bodyguards protecting her for six months after the film's release.

Trivia: Before Jason Miller landed the role, Jack Nicholson was up for the part of Father Karras but William Friedkin thought he was too unholy to ever play a priest.
