Trivia: In this film, Terry Moore appears with a small, stop-motion animated squirrel. In 1949 she appeared with a giant stop-motion animated gorilla, Mighty Joe Young.

Trivia: Even though Margaret Sullavan was infamous for her quick temper and disdainful attitude towards Hollywood, James Stewart counted working with her as one of the great joys of his professional career. And because he knew her personally, he was more equipped than most of the cast and crew members to deal with her frequent and volatile emotional outbursts.

Trivia: The entire "runaway sleigh ride" sequence was filmed in soundstages on the Warner Brothers backlot, with snow drifts simulated by soap flakes.

Trivia: In 1945, studio head Jack L. Warner went on a "cost-cutting kick," hoping to cut down on extravagant production expenditures during wartime. As an example, the mink coat Barbara Stanwyck is seen buying herself as a reward near the beginning of this film is the same coat Joan Crawford wore throughout another 1945 Warner hit, Mildred Pierce (1945).

An angel helps set an ambitious bishop on the right track.

Trivia: Originally Cary Grant played the bishop and David Niven the angel. When original director William A. Seiter left the film, Henry Koster replaced him and viewed what had been shot so far. He realized that the two were in the wrong roles. It took some convincing because Grant wanted the title role of the bishop, but he eventually accepted the change. His role as the angel was one of the most widely praised of his career.

Trivia: Robert J. Anderson is not the only actor in this film who also played a child in It's a Wonderful Life (1946). Karolyn Grimes, who plays Debby here, played Zuzu in It's a Wonderful Life, whilst Robert J. Anderson played a young George Bailey.

Trivia: This was the only film in which Gene Lockhart appeared with his wife Kathleen Lockhart and their daughter June Lockhart, who was making her film debut. Gene Lockhart and his wife Kathleen also appeared together as husband and wife Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Brock in "I'd Climb the Highest Mountain (1951)."

Trivia: Lionel Barrymore was originally set to play Scrooge, but had to back out due to illness. Barrymore instead suggested his friend Reginald Owen take over the role. Barrymore instead appeared in a special trailer for the film called "A Fireside Chat with Lionel Barrymore."

Trivia: Frank Capra didn't want anyone to play John Doe except Gary Cooper, who agreed to the part (without reading a script) for two reasons: he had enjoyed working with Capra on "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" (1936) and he wanted to work with Barbara Stanwyck.

Trivia: Four different endings were filmed, but all were ultimately deemed unsatisfactory during previews. A letter from an audience member suggested a fifth ending, which Frank Capra liked and used in the finished film.
