Fox and lynx on turkey feathers

Happy Monday!

Here are two turkey feathers I painted in 2018 or so. I painted lots of feathers for folks - horses, cows, a pit bull, etc. I really like these two. I have a tub full of beautiful turkey feathers from my friends' wee farm.

If you paint on a turkey feather, be sure to seal it with medium prior to painting on it. It's like a miniature ribbed canvas!

I never realized you could paint feathers. What kind of paint do you use?

once you gently cover them with matte medium, let them dry, then paint!

I put a silk gauze backing on them so they'd last for the client.

If you want to try it, you can buy turkey feathers to paint on. Take a board, tape the feather down on the board, gently and thoroughly cover it with say, matte medium. Let it dry, and then start painting! Seal it with waterproof sealant, or whatever works for you. I've painted pet portraits, horses, accidentally a horse portrait, as I'd just painted a white horse, and a friend's white horse had just died unbeknownst to me. So, she was so happy when presented with the feather as a gift of remembrance.

To dilute and extend the paint but with tooth, meaning that the paint will adhere more easily. Water simply dilutes the paint. Satin, matte and gloss are all good. Google matte medium.
