The pediatric practice from which I retired had what we called “the back room” where the docs and I did our charting. It had floor to ceiling windows on the wall with the back door. The windows and door looked out onto a grassy area that had lots of tall trees.

Sand hill cranes liked this area. One lunch break, as I was trying to get some of my morning charting done before the afternoon began, I thought someone was knocking on the door. It was one of the sand hill cranes pecking at the window. I got a delightful up-close look.

Sometimes the birds would be there when one of our little patients was in the hallway, and we’d bring them into the back room to see the birds. They always enjoyed this. Many of the birds were taller than our little patients.

They are actually gray but often look brown because they groom themselves with mud.
