Ecuador Remembers Che Guevara on the 45th Anniversary of his Assassination
HAVANA, Cuba.- Several activities, some of them presided over by Brigadier General (r) Harry Villegas (Pombo), a Cuban comrade in arms of Commander Ernesto Guevara, will honor the Heroic Guerrilla in Ecuador, on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of his assassination.
Pombo, as Che referred to him on his campaign diaries in the Congo and Bolivia, will give a lecture at the Ecuadorian Culture Center in Quito on Friday, in which he will tell about his experiences during the years he shared with the legendary Latin American revolutionary, the Prensa Latina news agency reported on Wednesday.
Participating in the meeting will be writer Raul Perez, president of the Center; Jorge Rodriguez, Cubas ambassador to Ecuador; and Rosa Mireya Cardenas, secretary for Peoples, Social Movements and Citizen Participation of the host country.
A book on anecdotes of the years they fought together, entitled Pombo, un hombre de la guerrilla del Che, (Pombo, a Man of Ches Guerilla) will also be presented in that South American nation ...

(6,238 posts)He was engaged in a war, so of course people died. By your logic George Washington is a serial killer and a sociopath. There are plenty of valid criticisms of Che, but you didn't list any good ones.

(17,502 posts)He was Castro's chief executioner, because that was the only thing he was actually good at. Was he a sociopath? It was well known that he was a serial rapist. After he executed Eutimio Guerra, he wrote to his dad: Id like to confess, Papa, at that moment I discovered I really like killing.
And no, George Washington did not did not joyfully execute political prisoners like Che when he was in charge of La Cabaña prison.

(17,502 posts)my two cents. While I'm a fan of Bernie Sanders, I'm not a fan of Che.

(6,238 posts)Like I said there are some valid critiques of Che, but calling him a sociopath isn't one of them.

(32,090 posts)Thank you for this. Exactly what I meant by intelligent criticism. The argument of course is reconciling the authoritarianism/paternalistic nature of Che with his anti-imperialist agenda. As promised in the welcome statement above I'm not going to go into commentary on that. Suffice it to say that we may have criticism but we can't doubt his sincerity and strength in rallying against capitalism and that aspect of Che is what I find appealing in the man - and certainly the aspect that led him to be killed. Imperialism does not take kindly to such dedicated resistance.

(11,481 posts)into the mix, doesn't mean we can't debate respective positions relative to those personalities. And the last part of your post is EXACTLY what I find appealing about Che Guevara also. NO one doubts the sincerity of his beliefs and his determination to bring those beliefs into fruition. Now, tactics and a theoretical understanding of classic Marxism? Yeah, I'd probably argue that with Che himself, but I would do it on a basis of respect for his side of the argument.

(6,238 posts)I think the biggest flaw in his theories, and this can apply to others as well, Mao's People's War springs to mind, is that his Foco Theory focuses too much on warfare. It may very well be a good tactic for wining a war, but that won't be enough to bring the working class to power. Still though, I can't question his sincerity.
