At 6:45am. Bumper to bumper doing 80. First time I was in the midst of that, I was amazed at how good these drivers were. It was rather like being back in the UK decades ago. Chinese are also excellent speed drivers.

Then I've had cars pass me south of Roanoke on 81 doing ~90+mph. That was too fast for safe control.

A good part of my law practice is defending folks being sued for car accidents. I know that almost everyone on a jury routinely drives a little over the speed limit but they will invariably punish a defendant going the least over the speed limit.

The real danger isn't a ticket. The real danger is being sued if there is an accident.

But sometimes if the traffic is heavy and fast it's safer to follow the general traffic speed within reason, otherwise you become an obstacle and that invites accidents. I have to make a choice, obstruct traffic or step it up. It's unfortunate.

Is 9 MPH above the posted speed limit.

On freeways or highways, I stick to 5 MPH above for the long haul. If I see a police car or motorcycle, I'll crank it back to the posted limit.

Also, I use cruise control on small town streets, especially. If I enter towns on a longer trip, I will use CC to stick to 1 MPH BELOW the posted limit, just to be sure I don't get stopped in small town USA ... CC has got it under control!

Literally never! I have been driving for almost 30 years and have yet to receive a single speeding ticket. The only one I have ever been nailed with was an illegal left-hand turn in an unfamiliar area when I missed the sign due to primarily watching some pedestrians on the corner who I thought might use the cross-walk.

Now, that's not to say I have never gone more than 10 over the speed limit, it's just that I've had the fortune of never getting caught (and I don't do it very often).

10 over on the highway.

I've been getting a little too cocky with the WAZE app. It's pretty good at notifying of speed traps.

I was doing 15 plus over (85 ish) downstate and back this weekend.

When I'm driving our car I feel a little more sporty. When I'm in the Expedition (mostly company vehicle) the limit, 70, is about all that is safe in that tank.

I've been pushing my luck. I need to keep it in the 70s in a 70 zone. I'm not even in a hurry.

It's just hard to find a speed where you don't get all bunched up with other cars on the interstate.

It's always nice to have a few maniacs passing you to flush out the cops..

Like George Carlin said "anyone going slower than you is an ASSHOLE. Anyone going faster than you is a FUCKING MANIAC!!"

going through Payson and my bank account was draining quickly as the angry officer was listing all my violations (I confess I was not paying attention behind me because I was passing a car but the moron in front of me would not get out of the way, also I didn't notice the speed limit had dropped so I was going faster than even what I thought it was to pass) of course I didn't have my current insurance card in the car as it was on my desk back home. he went back to his car, I presume to write up 4 or 5 tickets. I was feeling pretty bad about it all when he rushed back and practically threw my driver license in the car and said he had another call.

I stayed the limit the whole rest of the trip.

On the interstate, he insist I use cruz-control which I usually set 3mph over then blame the car. Otherwise, if he's not with me, I push it to 10 over. Drivers here in VA will often alert each other with head light blinks.

Been ticketed a few times in my 50 yrs of driving but mostly I've been lucky.

Now, just a 1/2 the time.

I got rear ended once and the 1st thing out of my boss's mouth was....You mean there is someone who drives faster than you? I let him know my reputation was secure as I was stopped at a red light.

My daughter missed the school bus one day and hubby was getting ready to drive her. She asked if I would drive her in, she wanted to talk. On the way in I said well? Oh, nothing. If Dad drove me I knew I would be 5 minutes late. With you I will be just on time.

In Connecticut speed limits seem to be merely suggestions. If you're going 65 on the highway you'll get run down unless of course there is a curve on a slight incline. In this case everyone slows to about 40 for some reason.

I've lived here for 15 years and I can still count the number of people pulled over on the highway on one hand.

Also, a lot of the off main roads are marked at 25 mph and these aren't always residential areas either. You can't realize how unbelievably slow 25 mph is until you follow the only other guy on the damn road who's actually doing 25 mph.

and both were total BS. First one was 16 years ago when we were just starting work in our new building in a commercial area (no homes or schools around for miles.) It's basically an office park on a circle and there were no speed limit signs anywhere that I ever saw. I got a ticket for going 39 in a 30. I asked where the signs are and the cop said it was posted around the corner - on a part of the circle I never see because my workplace came before I get to that part.

But what fucking pissed me right off was the day AFTER I paid my ticket the city came out and put up shiny new speed limit signs all around the circle. For FORTY MPH!

The second was less BS I guess. I was passing a semi on the highway and had it gunned up to about 80. Right where a trooper was doing radar under a bridge. Unbeknownst to me the previously 70mph zone I thought I was in had changed to a 65mph zone about the spot I accelerated. which I'm sure is why the trooper was parked there trapping people.

but I guess two in 30+ years ain't so bad since I routinely travel the state for work and fun and rarely go below 75.

Probably not coincidentally, I've known my wife for 33 years. Dated for two and been married for 31. In the 6 years and change before I met her I nearly lost my license on points a few a times. No suspensions but did spend one night in city jail for an unpaid ticket.

My max speed on the interstates is 80 and the Staties don't even look up from the sports page. When I do get stopped (about once a year), I give the ticket to my lawyer and it gets dismissed. No points on my license. Paying the lawyer $80 for a $156 ticket is a no-brainer.

Maybe as many as 7 or 8 but haven't gotten one since 2003.

I used to have to make long trips on the interstate, mostly IS 5 in NorCA and OR.

I "scientifically" set the cruise control at 7 mph over the speed limit (and hit break lightly and slowed when say LE.

I never got a ticket with that small but constant margin over the speed limit on the IS but did get tickets (and too often) by a heavy foot and inattention on smaller local state highways with more curves. There are (or were) speed traps.

Almost all Driving While Poor "probable" cause stops. My tail light lenses were still red, but faded. So they claimed "white light to rear" until I had the spare $5 to buy a bottle of transparent red model paint and augment my lenses. 19 stops in 18 months, plus somewhere in the range of 300 stop and frisks while walking. Four fix-it tickets, which all four judges dismissed as not valid after seeing my lenses. Then the prob causes dropped to about once every 60 days, and got more random. I didn't get a single stop once I left.

I drive speed limit per my speedometer, which appears to be 2-3 mph below what the local radar signs register. (Mine says 40, the sign says 37 or 38.) I check my lights weekly. License, insurance and registration always in order and within visible reach. And I don't drive much.
