(39,343 posts)I liked Tangled and Brave because the "princesses" saved their own asses and didn't need a "prince".
Lilo &Stitch was entertaining and SWTWC was eerie when I was young.
I am a grown man and will sing the Little Mermaid soundtrack when I take my daughter to Disney World as well.

(46,297 posts)The music, the messages, the actors, the choreography, the advanced cartoons, Dick Van Dyke in two roles.
Went to see it again in 1981 and was awed. Wept when they showed the Bird Lady, when Michael selflessly gave his father the Tuppence and asked if that made everything all right, and the end when they were all flying kites.
This movie kills me every time I watch it, like The Wizard of Oz.

(27,223 posts)I love the use of Tchaikovsky's music, and I also love the "medieval" art style used for the animation.
Also, best villainess ever!!
A close runner up is Bambi, with it's lush, Chinese-inspired artwork.
Third place: Dumbo.
For the live action stuff: Mary Poppins (although there are animated sequences).

(9,745 posts)Bambi and Dumbo made me cry when I was a little boy, so I haven't watched them with an adult's eye. Probably never will, and the same goes for "Old Yeller."

(27,223 posts)I was three years old, but I remember it vividly.
I bawled almost start to finish!!
The "Baby Mine" scene still makes me cry!!
And don't even get me started on "Old Yeller."
Sometimes I picture the people at Disney cackling with glee over planning on making little kids cry!

(9,745 posts)The thing is wonderful beyond description, if nothing else just to see and hear Sean Connery singing and dancing.

(28,394 posts)I love all the full-length cartoons though. I have a five-year old granddaughter and we like to talk about the latest Disney movies.
crazycatlady
(4,492 posts)And she loves all things Disney but she's not ready for the (full-length) movies. She loves Princesses but most movies have a dark scene in it and she finds them too scary.
For example in Frozen, she won't watch anything after Let it GO.

(28,394 posts)She quizzes me on them! She has the little dolls and I have to identify them. That is how I began to watch movies like "Brave" and "Moana".
I agree.... some of those scary scenes even frighten me. I'm not sure how her parents handle that. I still remember being terrified of the whale in "Pinocchio" when I was little!
The funny thing is that her parents didn't want her to know about princesses. Then she discovered "Frozen" and the rest is history. I'm so happy because I feel like it's something we can share.
Thank heaven for little girls.

(4,492 posts)Before, she was read books with generic princesses or the non DIsney versions of fairy tales. Then she started preschool and was around other kids her age. That changed everything.
Last year my two nieces were Anna and Elsa for Halloween. This year they're fighting over the Cinderella dress.

And I will use it to sing down those walls.

(38,458 posts)Helped to strengthen Mickey Mouse as the "Mouse" and Disney as the leader of toons in the 30s, and eventually allowed the production of what was at first called..."Disney's folly"...but later became known as................................................................................................
"Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs............an incredible hit that produced an incredible amount of money......
Snow White was the first full length animated film..
Steamboat Willie is a classic that all of us toon lovers should know about. Because of its success, it lead to other Disney short toons, and eventually the full length movies that this thread is all about. If Disney did not have the guts to produce ...Snow White, and it was a terrible failure....then who knows what would have happened to .............full length animated movies...and ..Disney's career as a whole...
Walt Disney was a creative genius...but...he was also not a nice guy.....but....this thread is about the genius and his creativity...and the later full length animation that was produced by that studio, and other great films without animation..such as Mary Poppins, or the Absent Minded Professor..with Jerry Lewis....This is about the enjoyment that came out of this studio...that lead the way....with ........"Steamboat Willie"

They were good stories, straight forward and had a certain charm about them. Still prefer them to this day.

(3,650 posts)I saw at least one live action animal Disney movie as a kid. I saw The World's Greatest Athlete - last movie I saw as a kid, in my opinion, whereas the first movie I saw as an adult was Jaws (about two years later - 13 vs 15). Anyway, The Little Mermaid was probably the best Disney movie I've seen, but it's a small sample.
