Driving up to Maine in a few weeks and need a place to stop and waste a day.
Thinking of Bridgeport or New Haven in Connecticut
or Newport, RI
Any suggestions? We like good food and brewing scenes, historic places, things to see, etc.
What say you DU?
PS, thought of posting this into one of the places forum, but they don't have a New England group.
PPS, yes, I've heard of Boston.

(175,771 posts)I highly recommend Newport. I think it has all the elements that you want, certainly the history. A second suggestion would be Mystic, CT, home of the Mystic Seaport.
Have a wonderful time.

(54,502 posts)I'd go with Newport, R.I., but it's a hell of a ways there from Falls Church, or wherever you are.

(34,195 posts)Let's say you are driving from Falls Church, VA to Portland, ME.
Google says that's ten hours driving time via I-95N -- > 552 miles.
Let's say you want to divide the driving time in half, for a two day trip.
That comes to five hours per day (276 miles).
A 276 mile drive from Falls Church brings you into southwestern CT.
So my answer is Mystic Seaport, CT. It's a little over half way, but stopping sooner brings you closer to New York City.
