There were four of us, three were 18, one was 17.

Dale had ridden the rails before and told us to wait on the woods while he
went to talk to the yard bull. The train to Seattle would leave in an hour.
We waited with our backpacks and then jumped into an open freight car
heading north from Salem, Oregon. Once moving we were gleeful, hanging
our legs out of the open door, watching the scenery go by, through the woods
and over streams. Wine and reefer, 1969. I ended up doing the freight car rides
four times, to Seattle,
Portland and Vancouver. Sometimes the train was moving when we jumped in, sometimes
we got on and waited. What a blast. Many memories.
