Is it okay to sleep with a ceiling fan on?

We have a ceiling fan above our bed. Right now to cold for a/c but last night I got hot. I figure have the fan on low tonight and I won't get hot. But of course my mother has always taught me. Don't sleep with a fan breeze directly on you. You'll get sick. So is the old Wife's tale correct or does it need to be put to bed?

You don't get sick from a breeze. You get sick from bacteria and viruses. So sleep comfortably.

And, it consumes far less power than your A/C system.

Ceiling and box fans were the only coolerators available when I was growing up in S. Fla. Family could not afford A/C.

If you're hot and the fan is helping you cool off, leave it on. It won't give you a cold or anything else. My second floor, especially my bedroom, gets pretty hot in the afternoon even with my little bitty AC running so sometimes I leave a small fan on, pointed right at me. It's never done me any harm at all.

It was quite painful, but I'm sure it wasn't just the breeze. Phlegm--ugh.
Pleurisy is an infection (I think) in the pleural lining around the lungs.
The pain can stop you in your tracks.

I think that could be worse. I have a well, and the water tastes great.
But I'm afraid to drink too much of it because it's has high lime and
calcium. The stuff of stones.

don't put it at top speed as it can irritate your eyes / mouth

make sure you have the direction correct

(I googled)
In the summer, ceiling fan blades should rotate in a counterclockwise or "forward" direction to create cool downward airflow. In the winter, fan blades should rotate in a clockwise or "reverse" direction to redistribute warm air, which naturally rises to the top of the ceiling.J

I think being so hot that my hair is wet is much more likely to give me a cold.

I get too warm if the temp reaches 70, so I use fans all the time. They're all pointed straight at me. During a heat wave, they're about four feet away from me. I'm 65 and I ain't dead yet.

I have one in the bedroom and one in the rec room in case i fall asleep on the couch.

and we never turn any of them off. I always keep them turning where they push the air up and out towards the walls so you never feel a draft from one. Summer or winter.

Only room we don't have one is the kitchen but it's right beside the dining room which does have one. Again up and out, not down
