In your opinion, the most overrated actor//actress of all time?

Actors are seen as the face of the movies, television, and other media products in which they star.
Extra attention is paid to them, as if they are infallible people.
Hollywood actors and actresses have become like gods to many people around the globe, and they are worshiped with praise, money, awards, and gifts.
However, many of the actors receiving the most accolades are extremely overrated in their raw talent, charisma, and chemistry with other actors.
While many actors bring in the big box office bucks, they have little or no acting range and often phone in their performances.
Who do you consider to be the most overrated actor of all time?

for some strange reason people identify with and love to watch people like that.

Wayne played the same part over and over and over - the costumes changed and so did the story but Wayne was pretty much the same.

Think of that awful end times book series - the left behinders - those aren't good literature, but they have sold a gazillion.
If you like Wayne that's fine. I don't. And that is why this country is supposed to have competition.

The Richelieu character is usually overplayed. He wasn't called the Grey Eminence for nothing.

Would add Will Penny to the list. His was a narrow talent; he couldn't do comedy to save his life. However, the right role and the right director, he could bring it home. Finally, he was a professional; he never phoned it in.

I saw too many of those movies with my dad to not love him. Planet of the Apes/Soylent Green/Omega Man. Three of my favorites. It is hard sometimes to bring a critical eye to the passion of your youth. For example Vincent Price is vastly superior to Heston or Smith in I am Legend/Omega Man/The Last Man on Earth. I saw Price in this role when I was in my 40s.

Still “Take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape!”.

I love Uncle Vinnie. Met him once, at a friend's holiday party. He was her mom's second cousin and insisted I call him Uncle Vinnie. Never forget it. What a gentleman. I can' t help but well up when I see him in Edward Scissorhands, his last film. Truly he was one of the greats.

That is exactly how I reacted. My friend did not clue me in and totally introduced me cold. I step out on a deck an we approached him from behind.
She says to me, " I want you to meet my Uncle Vinnie."
So I' m..."okay".
Then he turns and I'm like...holy shit...."Mr. Price, I'm a real fan." He covered my hand with his long hands and said," call me Uncle Vinnie." Inside I was all jello squeeeeee.
I tried not to make a complete ass of myself, but he was really sweet and totally put me at ease. Actually, I'm a painter and he was a great collector of American art, so we talked about art.

It was one of the most surreally transcendent moments of my life and I love to tell the story. Thanks for letting me tell it.

...Tom Cruise is winning. He's okay, usually average or above; he doesn't go outside of his boundaries much, which is good. He does attempt to play a character. There are no really great actors on your list, though... Angelina Jolie had something in a couple of early perfs, but wasn't able to repeat... John Wayne was not a natural actor. He was a terrible actor, but filmed well in the 1930s. He developed a screen persona and acted that way successfully... Some of the choices aren't much as actors, like Adam Sandler. They play a persona. They are likeable as their persona... it's a bit like Shirley Temple. She was not a good actress at all, but she was a terrific entertainer. Probably, we should think of some actors more as "stars" or "entertainers" because many of the can't really act.

If there was any role that could turn someone around on Katherine Hepburn, I would think it would be this one.

Stunning performance. One wouldn't necessarily have to ask for subtlety in this role, since the real-life Eleanor of Acquitaine was a larger than life figure herself. But Hepburn turns in a masterful performance. To be able to express the pain, rage, and frustration at being an intelligent, strong-willed and ambitious woman hedged in by intelligent, strong-willed and ambitious men whom she alternately loved and hated, would be a daunting challenge for anyone. But she nails it.

She is a good actress but, in my opinion, an overrated one. I used to love her but as I got older and saw more of her films I realized that she never really "disappears" into her role. There is always a Meryl Streep-ness about every performance. There are better actresses who don't get quite the recognition that she gets. Tilda Swinton comes to mind. I saw her in a movie called "Julia" a few years ago and that's when the Meryl Streep thing hit me. And recently Felicity Huffman has come onto my radar. I'd never seen anything she'd been in, including Desperate Housewives. Saw her in three seasons of "American Crime" and was blown away.

166. Stallone overrated?

I don't think so.

He cannot act - that's for damn sure - but I don't consider him "overrated" at all.

168. Rocky was a great film, imo

It won 3 Academy Awards, including Best Picture & Best Director (John Acildsen)
And Stallone deserved the nomination he got for Best Actor
(I think he wrote the screenplay as well)

Unfortunately, he never showed any real acting talent after that
(I did like Rambo & First Blood)

178. Myley Cyrus? Adam Sandler? Jennifer Lopez? Ashton Kutcher?

What a completely ridiculous list.

Doesn't the word "overrated" imply that there are a large number of people who "rate" those people highly as actors or actresses?

Even among people who may have enjoyed works by those particular people (and others on there) I don't know anyone who did so because they thought they were good actors or actresses.

Of those the only critical accolade I can ever recall for any of those was Jennifer Lopez in Soderbergh's Out of Sight but that was 20 plus years ago.

How on earth did you land at those choices? I mean has Myley Cyrus even been in more than like 2 or 3 movies? And none of them have had any box office success in years (if at all).

star-worship didn't begin recently.

Moreover, Lord Byron had that effect back in the day, too!

204. Bruce Willis, in the post-glory days phase of his career

I know some might feel "Die Hard" is crap too, but I'm not one of them. I think it's a classic.

But ANYONE with Netflix knows that Willis is now in a "template"...I've seen at least SIX recent movies of his on Netflix in which he plays a retired CIA / FBI / whatever agent, and his son gets into some kind of fiasco, so he gets drawn into it...really, really, really the modern-era template for Willis.

I know some people don't like him because he's a Republican, but that aside, for the people who DO like "Die Hard," I'd be very interested to hear your take on his last "GREAT" movie. Or even "very good" movie.

I thought his appearances in the "Expendables" movies were fun, but he essentially did what Schwarzenegger did in those films...show up and "be himself" for a scene or two.
