He had adopted Bella nine years ago, when she still was a puppy.
Her leg was amputated due to bone cancer, and vets informed him last year that sadly, despite this action, the cancer had spread to her lungs, and was now terminal.
She had been given just three to six months to live.

'fun things' he likes as I know his day is drawing near. Fucking sucks cuz I love that dog so and he so 'gets me' that it is almost uncanny...

good on you for recognizing and making the effort... cherish the time... if Riley 'gets you', that's a special communication and knowledge between you two. Memorize everything that you can (of these final days)
