The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsMy buddy with the addiction problem called me tonight.
I'm not sure why. He was walking to a drug dealer's house when he called me. He had overdosed for the second time in a month a few nights ago- Xanax and heroin again.
I took him out to dinner a few weeks ago at a nice restaurant. I didn't preach. I mostly let him talk and listened. I just told him to take care of himself when we parted. Then I get this call tonight.
At the end of the conversation tonight, I told him, "You know you're in trouble." He said that the police weren't going to press any charges against him from when he overdosed. I told him, "Not that kind of trouble. I'm talking about your life." He then said he was at old dude's place and had to hang up the phone.
I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't make it through the night. I don't know what to do.

(131,391 posts)He was reaching out for help from you, but clearly you weren't going to be able immediately to meet him (and wrestle him away from his destination.) Was good you could, at least, talk to him.

(14,276 posts)When people are battling demons like that, it is hard to break through to the real them. You tried and that is what counts. At least he knows you care and he sounds like he needed to hear that from someone.
You're a good man, Tobin.

(149,804 posts)And you helped him as much as you could, or as he would let you.
The rest is up to him. Remember this--it's important.
I'm so sorry.

(206,818 posts)Those with legal issues are often mandated to do treatment. If he does, especially if he has a sponsor, those are the folks who would know what to do. Those would be the ones to contact, if you know.
But you did do what you could. And he knows you're there for him or he wouldn't have called you. That obviously means quite a lot.
