What do I add to it to make it a tasty eat-at-my-desk breakfast?

(25,816 posts)I've never been a grits devotee, but my sister always used to order them and inevitably would come back the apologetic response by the waitress/waiter that the grits were "instant"... so that was the first thing I thought about and had to smile.
She always added a dab of butter and found them edible anyway. Me, I'll pass, but bon appetit!

(34,139 posts)All the way through college. He should have come down with ricketts or some other vitamin deficiency!
Once a week he'd borrow a hot plate, cook a pound of grits, stir in a block of cheese, let it set up and cut it into blocks. He kept those in a cooler. During the summer he'd put a block in the window to heat up, in the winter he'd put it on the radiator. That was dinner.
His other meals were stale bread with peanut butter and whatever he could scrounge from places he'd never mention.
This was long before ramen noodle were a thing. When any of his friends had a few extra bucks we'd stand him to dinner but none of us were much better off than he was so that didn't happen very often.

(12,132 posts)I love me some cheese grits.
but if butter, salt and pepper are all I've got, then that's good too.
It would REALLY help if you had a western omelette and some bacon to go with the grits. And rye toast and strawberry jam. And corned beef hash.

(10,626 posts)scrambled eggs and extra-crispy bacon. I would crumble the bacon up, mix everything together with the grits, and eat it as a single dish. It was delicious that way.

(57,738 posts)An empty can, I now see. That's okay; I've got a full can of the five-minute grits (same thing) from the Walmart on top of the file cabinet.
I nuke my grits too, so I'm clearly not a purist.
I put in butter, cream (that instant powdered stuff versus the real stuff, if that's what I have), salt, some raisins. Whatever works.
I put hot sauce on everything too, but I haven't tried it on grits.
Nutrition-wise, grits don't have a lot going for them. They're just great on a really cold morning. Warm ones too.
Enjoy.
