First week in Malaysia - An expat's DU journal

Welcome to my journal. I was requested, when I first announced in the lounge I got a job in Kuala Lumpur, to write and send photos. I'll start with writing. How did my first week go?

Well, my school is awesome. Selective private schools are the best. The students looked at me funny when I spoke fluent Mandarin, sometimes better than the Malay Chinese.

1: Coconuts cost less than $1. Nothing better on a hot November day (yes, I said hot) than ice cold coconut milk straight out of the coconut.

2: Food here is amazing and cheap. And it's all Haalal, which is good for someone who keeps kosher.

3: Rain, rain and more downpours. Did I mention rain?

4: It take a few days to get used to seeing all the Muslim head dress. Next time some cocksucker in the States says "all Muslims are. . .," tell them about Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei and the Hui Chinese Muslims. Then punch the motherfucker for being a racist turd. Don't forget Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, East Timor and the massive Muslim minorities in Singapore and southern Thailand.

5: Obama was here and it screwed up the city. Roads were closed. It was a mess.

6: I went to a bar on the 33rd floor of a fancy hotel. It had a pool in the middle and it rained while I was swimming and drinking.

7: Coffee here is cheap and good.

8: The school is interviewing my wife for an elementary position, so both of us may be working in the same place starting in February.

9: Finally, schools here start in January and end in November. I teach nine classes a week, but am in administration so I have those duties. But the fun is I only teach 167 days a year, not including 23 testing days. I have so many holiday days it's great! And it's a 12 month contract with bonuses.

Enjoying life here.

Mindanao in the southern Philippines is the home of MILF. No, not that MILF. The Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

And then, of course, there's Bosnia. To paraphrase City Slickers, they're Muslim and they're white.

And now we can live vicariously through you as well as through Recursion (Mumbai), DFW (Dusseldorf), and doubtless others. Maybe you can band together and start an Expat group.
