My wife called me to tell me that 16 schoolkids from one school near us were on that plane, on their way back from a field trip down to Spain. Their parents were probably all waiting at the Düsseldorf airport to pick them up. I can't imagine.........
*edited because my wife got the number of kids from the class in Haltern wrong. It was 16 plus two teachers. The photos from their schoolmates in today's news were difficult to look at.

This a very strange accident.
DFW
(54,505 posts)It took off from Lanarca and without any word from the crew smashed into the side of a mountain near Athens. The aviation authorities were able to piece together that for some reason the plane had completely depressurized at high altitude and everyone on board, including the crew, had lost consciousness.
I remember one time I was on a flight in the USA, and some young mother was letting her young boy play with a hammer. I thought it must have been made out of plastic, but when the kid started smashing it against the window, I saw it was a REAL hammer, and told a flight attendant, who freaked out and took it away. The mother was giving both her and me dirty looks, but at least the window stayed intact. If the kid had managed to pop though the inner and outer windows, something similar might have happened.

Eek on the kid with the hammer!

(54,505 posts)But letting a little boy smash away at a plane window with a real hammer at 30,000 feet was so incredibly stupid, it never occurred to her that ANY one would just let their kid whack away at a window with a steel hammer. Actually, nowadays, I doubt you'd even past security with one. This was pre-9/11.
Heartbreaking.
I am so sorry.
