...because there's nobody there eligible to attend.
I pulled into a convenience store/gas station yesterday, bought some food for lunch, and took it out to my truck to eat. One of my co-workers was with me, eating lunch at the same time. While I'm eating, some lady (probably about 65 y/o, looking like she has the IQ of a Brownback voter) gets out of a car a couple parking slots down and stops on the sidewalk, maybe six feet directly in front of my truck. She lights a cigarette and starts smoking. Not three feet beside her is a rack of propane tanks for exchange, clearly marked "FLAMMABLE--NO SMOKING". So I laid down on my horn. She wasn't looking at me, so my horn startled her enough to drop her cigarette. She looked at me and reached down for her cig. I pointed vigorously at the propane, mouthing the word "PROPANE" at her. She picked up her cigarette, took a drag off it, flipped me off, and walked PAST the propane rack with her lighted cigarette and stood by her car, where she continued to smoke.
Not wanting to be totally immolated today, I started my truck and backed out. I pulled around the gas pumps, where a couple more Mensa rejects in SUVs were, within five feet of a gas pump, trying to hook jumper cables from one car battery to another. HO-Lee SHIT! Where is the Darwin Award committee when I need them?
I drove away from there as fast as I could. Kansas REEALLY needs to spend MORE on education, not less! To the Mensa membership committee, I can only say: no intelligent life here in Olathe, Kansas!

(37,457 posts)Oh YES, it CAN and very likely WILL happen to you. You can only smoke near flammable gases so many times before BOOM happens. Then, if you don't die, you will be moaning in the hospital you had NO idea whatsoever.

(23,356 posts)maybe the tanks aren't leaking today, or maybe the last guy to exchange a tank didn't get the valve turned off completely......pays your money takes your chances--although in this case, you're gambling with the safety of other people in the vicinity.

(35,804 posts)We don't pump our own gas, so people mostly stay in their cars, which helps a little.
But where you do see problems is with the lawn care workers who travel around in trucks with trailers. There are zillions of them, all over the place, and they use huge amounts of gasoline. They are often filling leaf blowers and lawn mowers with gasoline, cigarette hanging out of their mouth. Very unsafe.
