Update: Duffy rallied a bit last night, eating a piece of roasted chicken skin. This morning he ate another piece of it, and was strong enough to go outside and up the walk and down the driveway by the river. Ate a few pieces of kibble, but he didn't keep those down and is very very tired once again but alert still. So glad I didn't give up on him yet. I will support his enormous will to live.
Thanks everyone, for the good wishes.

It will be soon. He's comfortable, still cognizant of surroundings and responsive to voice and touch, but it's coming. Good old boy. Duffy, rescued by us from a shelter where he had lived for two years. He's been part of this family for about nine years since then. Constant companion, faithful friend. One thing I appreciated about him was that he was ALWAYS ALWAYS up, always "in", always cheerful and happy.
Good dog.

(60,010 posts)I am watching my 10 year old Goldie slow down. He has cataracts, and is getting stiff and moving slow, and i know that time is coming too quickly.
Being there for them at the end seems such a wee thing to do, in light of all they give us, but damn, it IS hard.
