The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsHello fellow leftists, im new here
I come from mostly a right-wing gaming forum, mostly because I like debates but also because it was my favorite game (Darkfall), obviously they hated me there lol and still do, but I googled "left wing forum" and "RevLeft" came up, so I joined them and they hated me too xD. On one forum, I am too far to the left, on the Socialist forum, I am too far to the right lol. I consider myself a Marxist for the most part but of course not entirely, largely because there is no "Marxist" system, most of what Marx said was stabs at Capitalism, he never said "Do this, than do that, and bam you have a Marxist society!!" He never even attempted that, which is good, he knew we should decide ourselves what a Socialist society should look like, he did not try to dictate it to us. In that sense, I am a Marxist.
Are most people here liberals or what? I assume this is the case, if so, what do you guys think of people farther to the left than you, such as myself? It seems people stuck in the middle of the extreme left and the center left like me have no home

(149,771 posts)I hope you 'll be happy here, and find a spot here where you feel comfortable.
The Lounge is mainly our social forum--a place where we post silly pictures and make jokes.
My guess is most folks here are liberals. I am, for sure. Pro-choice, pro-vaccine, pro-environment, anti-Keystone pipeline, anti-TPP and so on.
Anyway, welcome!

I would have added links to the Socialist Progressive group etc. but antiquie beat me to it. There's also lots of other groups here having nothing to do with politics, e.g. Pets. But you can see all this on the left side of the screen.

(28,552 posts).... I don't think you will find a LOT of Marxists here, but there are definitely some. There are also some very smart folks here, some folks with big hearts and strong desires for a better, fairer country. I think you will find some worthwhile stuff here, I've been here 12 years and I still visit this site every day.
That said, as with any group of people there are a handful of idiots, jerkoffs and such. Familiarize yourself with the Ignore feature and don't be afraid to use it. I found long ago here that if someone says something idiotic once, they are highly likely to do it again
Just a suggestion, I like this place a lot better with a bit of filtering, which I resisted for years for reasons I now forget.
Like I said though, I come from a Right-wing forum, if I were to ignore people who insult me I would have had no one to talk to there
I love when people attack me though for a huge array of reasons, and also like I said it was a gaming forum, so being a young gamer myself, one of my main forms of entertainment is watching people get angry for dumb reasons As you say though you are older, and as I get older im sure it wont be as entertaining to me so its understandable for you to ignore them I dont blame you

(38,346 posts)... and it was like that in school baseball. Always picked last, exiled to left field, I'd watch the sky, I'd watch the grass, I'd watch little insects crawling on me, I'd watch the girls playing softball in the other field (it was segregated in those days, boys played baseball, girls played softball) and eventually the innings would change and I'd still be way out there in left field and nobody cared if I played or not.
I grew up, finally figured out some stuff that seems to be innate in most people, and became like Dr. Who, a very dangerous fellow when I don't know what I'm doing.
I'm not a Marxist, but I am very left, I suppose.
Nobody chooses the circumstances of their birth, therefore we all equally deserve to live on this planet. There's no reason we can't all enjoy good food, safe comfortable shelter, literacy, and appropriate medical care for no more reason than that we are children of this earth and willing to share our gifts with others.
Trained as an ecologist and evolutionary biologist, the economists don't make any sense to me. You may as well ask a human "why" they do something as to ask a squid. And the behaviors of the weirdest squid are far less bizarre than the collective behaviors of humans.

(11,833 posts)I'm a democratic socialist. I've read Marx and agree with you one hundred percent that he's well worth reading, as are many of his successors, and it's really more for understanding political economies than as some sort of template for rehauling everything. I'm probably pretty far left for the USA but I think in most of Western Europe or South America I'd be considered a moderate, lol.
I feel most countries have a mixed economy and while I don't want to abandon all aspects of capitalism, I think most workers in our country would benefit from more socialistic type ventures like doubling the minimum wage and adjusting it with cost of living, free higher education, single payer and / or free health care, and eliminating the capital gains tax and just taxing all capital gains same as income (so the highest rate would be 33% as opposed the the current rate of around 20%, and no tax breaks for wealthy corporations, to name a few. I push for progressive candidates locally and offline, where I think change is most necessary.
I'm also an Obama supporter, and feel too much emphasis is placed by many posters here on the presidency, and I guess my biggest frustration is those who say don't vote rather than vote for the most progressive candidate available in every election. I also would prefer more emphasis here on what we do locally in our immediate environment and with local and state elections, including Congress. I'd also prefer a more youthful demographic here - nothing against older folks, but I'd like more younger ones to see how much you can learn and benefit greatly by being engaged here.
I'm a gamer too. We have a gaming forum here at DU. I mostly post gaming stuff on gamefaqs. Currently playing Borderlands The Pre-Sequel.
I feel comfortable here at DU as I believe you will too. Especially if you stay pretty chill and not insult others. Someone you might not like one day might blow you away with their intelligence or humor on another day. So, good luck to you here. Have fun!
